For the school complainers: What you need to realize is that NYC is no longer an equal-opportunity City. It is a City for the rich, in housing availability, cost of life, etc. - if you have to have public schooling, it is going to be subpar. The City does not cater to families. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think the only solution would be to throw money at the public school system, as sad as this sounds. [ Reply | More ]

NP--Actually, they do throw money at it--spending per pupil is very high. That's not the problem, I think. [ Reply | More ]

all I know is the school budget at dd's school has been cut for the 2nd year in a row. they had to close the library before and after school, and now they're having to cut performances and it's a performing arts school! [ Reply | More ]

I think you have no idea what you're talking about. There are great general ed public schools all over the city. Also, there is more to NYC than Manhattan. [ Reply | More ]

THen why all the complaints here? And why the NY Times article today that only the rich kids are getting into the good publics? [ Reply | More ]

I just read this in a book: "Avoid complaining, criticizing or being negative; be especially wary of absolving yourself from responsibility and simply blaming 'them' for failures. [ Reply | More ]

It wasn't. They looked at the stats on where the DCs who got into the G&Ts lived - it's not perfect - 10025 includes CPW, Riverside Dr and a few housing projects, but overall it's a good indicator. [ Reply | More ]

The article was about gifted programs. Those are not the only "good publics." There are many, many very good general education public schools in NYC. [ Reply | More ]

that is not true. nyc is manhattan: queens, brooklyn, the bronx, etc., are boroughs of manhattan. [ Reply | More ]

When do you see that the change happened from it being equal opportunity to not? [ Reply | More ]

I guess by the 90's when the price of living here shot up dramatically. The message is subtle but clear: live here rich or don't bother living here at all. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I have to disagree. I have a friend who emigrated here from India. She and her husband are not rich by any standard, but they earn enough to pay the rent, support themselves and their son, and send money to India. They work multiple jobs and the education that their son is getting at a public school is far superior to what he was getting in India. So in this case, the city is for them a means to improve their lives and the lives of their family. [ Reply | More ]

Live here rich and white, or go live in the boroughs (till you're exiled even further away). this weekend we were in central park for hours and there were no people of color...none! When did we become homogenous? may as well live in a suburb. [ Reply | More ]

It has always been segregated, at least in the 90s it definitely was. [ Reply | More ]

Staten Island has the largest population of Liberians outside of Liberia and a sizable Sri Lankan population. Queens is noted as being the most diverse of the boroughs- check out Jackson Heights if you doubt me, or read a census survey. They have them on the NYC gov website [ Reply | More ]

I think you also have to take the good with the bad and take responsibility for your decisions. We moved back to NYC last year and agonized over WHERE to move - assumed we would end up in brooklyn but after researching schools for almost a year landed back in manhattan - largely because i wanted dc to take advantage of g/t at the citywides if he got in; i always felt he belonged there and seemed like such a great opportunity. Personally we would not make the commute from another borough - our rent is atrocious - but this is what we have chosen...and dc did get into our first choice city wide and we couldn't be happier. There are crazy processes in cities all of the country too...so you could end up going through some kind of bs no matter where you live. [ Reply | More ]

My Forest Hills public school is far superior to the private Manhattan kindergarten I enrolled my dc in two years ago. [ Reply | More ]
