for anyone who cares, i heard from a reliable source that the incoming K class at anderson will consist of 36 girls and 14 boys. (or has this been discussed already?) i think onsites should be brought back for the citywides -- and be available to ALL district-wide G&Ts as well -- for those students meeting the preestablished testing cutoff. like the old days... Right. In addition to the test, you will have an onsite at 5 schools. When do you think you'll get a notification then? [ Reply | More ]

np. That's how it was when we applied a few years ago, and we got most of our notifications at the same time, or soon after private school letters came out. [ Reply | More ]

But you could not apply to every school you wanted. In D2, you only had to pick one school to go to for an onsite and if they did not take you, you were out of luck. [ Reply | More ]

Only 1 onsite for district programs, but there were also onsites for all of the citywide programs, and dc could conceivably get into all the schools/programs where you applied. Nothing's perfect. Whatever system get used will have its pluses and minuses. I'm just saying that it used to be dc had to go to multiple onsites and most people got their notifications a lot earlier than they do now. The could always introduce gender balance into the lotter y process. On sites aren't the only way to secure a gender balance. I'm not crazy about qualifying by a test score alone but at least it's objective and erases the possibility of politics or biases having a role in who gets in and who doesn't. [ Reply | More ]

as someone whose child was accepted a few years ago at anderson under the old SB/onsite system (having scored a 99 on SB5) off of the WL very late in the process, and whose kid is doing extraordinarily well there, i sometimes think how lucky we were to get in at all -- dc very nearly didn't. however, i still think the onsite is the best way to balance a class -- it's not and shouldn't be only about scores -- it's about personality and other factors (including racial and geographic diversity) that scores alone can't qualify. i'm in favor of onsites. ^^^with respect to your point about poltics and biases having a role, no system will be perfect. [ Reply | More ]

I like the alternate view: give the school the best and the brightest and let them (the professionals) figure out how to teach the kids. The other factors you mention are legit BUT in the G&T schools, they should be secondary to aptitude. [ Reply | More ]

NP: We just got into Anderson (1st year without onsites), but I am in favor of onsites also. Access to citywides should be primarily about aptitude. But it's also important that extraordinary kids who might not otherwise have a really good alternative to Anderson should get an opportunity at the Anderson education. That's the kind of kid that the onsite could have reached, but scores/lottery alone just will not. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson never prioritized the kids without another alternative. Most have always been D3/D2 MC/UMC kids with other alternatives. [ Reply | More ]

We are at the school. Most families are well off and live on UWS or UES. [ Reply | More ]

We're at the school, too, and you really don't know. There are plenty of families that might "present" as UMC but are struggling with under $40K income but you'd never know. We've found each other. What is it they say "water seeks its own level?" That's why you think everyone is like you. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think so. We have seen enough apartments over the years, have heard enough about the vacations people take, renovations they made and summer places they have, the expensive camps and afterschool activities they send their kids to. Could not be done on $40K year, or even $200K in most cases. I am not saying there are no kids like that there but it's a small minority. [ Reply | More ]

This can't be correct. They definitely accepted more than 50 kids, and they still don't know who accepted the spot and who turned it down. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think the gender balance issue is a surprise at all. The 36/14 is about what Hunter 2nd rounds were. Generally girls do outscore boys 2:1 in the early years. All of the G&Ts are going to be girl heavy. [ Reply | More ]

Given registration isn't over, that would suggest that they didn't extend offers beyond the 50 seats in anticipation of decliners. [ Reply | More ]

This is consistent with the boy/girl ratio at many of the district g&t's last year, so I would not be surprised. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for sharing. I wonder what it means for our class of kids when they're trying to get in for middle school. If there's gender balancing at that point, it will be almost a class of new boys. [ Reply | More ]

You don't need an onsite to fix this, simple gender balancing would have done it. [ Reply | More ]

At last year's LL talent show, the boys (who were in the minority) did a skit about it. Since boys by 1st or 2nd tend to socialize mostly with other boys, it's probably somewhat limiting for them, but probably makes for a quieter class? I have a boy, wouldn't mind if he was in a girl-heavy class at all, but he would probably hate it. [ Reply | More ]

I would hate it for my ds, I think it's really bad especially if your ds is stereotypical active boy. [ Reply | More ]

They don't know yet. They haven't even finished contacting everyone on the list. I was in the office yesterday. And Donna wasn't even sure who were boys and girls on the list because there are so many non-gender-specific names on the list. [ Reply | More ]
