[ - ] This is a really stupid question: I accidentally forgot to invite one kid from dd's preschool class to her bday party. Realized it after the fact and apologized to the mom. She seemed fine but she definitely knew that we'd forgotten (before we spoke about it.) Now dd has been invited to HER son's party at a very expensive place and I feel guilty knowing that she's being charged extra b/c she invited the whole class. Dd isn't especially close to her ds and would have no clue about missing the party but just as I was about to RSVP no it occurred to me that this might seem to be some kind of slight. I only care at all b/c our younger kids will be in the same class next year. Should dd skip it or go? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think it depends on how early her start time was to begin with. Our nanny comes at 9am, so if I wanted her to start coming at 8, I would not think that is so early as to be a "hardship". OTOH, my friend's nanny arrives at 7am, so I might feel differntly about asking for 6am. I also think it depends on total hours. If her workweek is going over the 50-55 hours, then I think the extra hours maybe need to be more like OT. [ Reply | More ]

Don't give an allowance for chores that she wouldn't ordinarily do. Things like keeping her room clean, bed pulled up are enough for a 5yo, maybe feeding a pet if you have one. And keep the allowance small ($1), but don't make it a bribe or punishment for good/bad behavior- use it as a teaching method to show her how to use money. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I really need btdt advice about my childcare option for next year. I'll be as concise as possible. I work in Queens and live in Brooklyn. DD will be 2.5 in september. Option 1: most expensive. playgroup in my neighborhood. will have to pay for babysitting before and after. but dd can go even on days i'm home. and i can support a local business. Option 2: least expensive. playgroup near my office. i'll have to bring dc on my commute (i go by car). i'll probably have to be late to work every day but i can get away with it (although it might be stressful for me). playgroup ends after my work day ends. Option 3: babysitter right near my office. flexible hours, great location. will have to commute with dc and i think she'd prefer a playgroup instead of a sitter. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I prefer to have dd in daycare near home. It's better if I am sick, I like the few minutes to collect my thoughts en route, etc. plus the sitter can watch dd if she's too sick for playgroup. At 2.5 I think a playgroup is nicer for them so I nix the sitter. But after that I vote for the one near your office, also that one is cheaper and there are fewer moving parts. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if I'd call it "overserving", but yes, it is a middle-class retention program. If the City loses it's middle class (and it came close in the 1970's), it runs the real risk of becoming a city of extremes - those who can afford to totally insulate themselves from everyday life and those who cannot afford to move anywhere else. At that point, the extremely wealthy will also leave the City (essentially what happened to Detroit) - when they go, their support of the institutions that are the major tourist draws in NYC will go with them (both for-profits like restaurants and non-profits like MoMA). NYC can't afford any of this - not the loss of the tax base from middle class incomes or from the loss of the tourist industry in NYC. It's not all about the best educational policy, it's about what's best for the City as a whole. [ Reply | More ]

While I'm all for diversity, there's not enough slots in this city. The space that they do have should go to the best kids, period. Try letting him run around at home (especially outside if you have a yard) without a diaper on, and encouraging him to sit on the potty (make sure its accessible) often. Don't be upset if it doesn't work or he has accidents. Encourage sitting but don't make it something to fear or loathe. We started our ds at 21mos and he is now fully potty trained at 24 months. Thanks. He stands to pee every night in the potty before bathtime. Should I start making him sit? [ Reply | More ]

I think my ped started recommending it around 18months. dd is completely disinterested, even now at age 2 1/2. I think it depends on the kid, more than the age. buying the little potty, letting her run around naked, bringing her in the bathroom with me--she's not interested in any of it. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Watching a baby story. This lady is in labor, her dh goes to lay down and she then says Oh can you rub my feet..he gets up. As he's rubbing her feet she says can you feed my ice chips, he does this too. He then goes to lay down again and when his head hits the pillow she says could you get me a pillow? What a primadonna 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Have you ever been in labor? You're allowed to act like a primadonna - and why would her dh be taking a nap at that point? [ Reply | More ]

op:yes I have been in labor 2 times and am pg with #3 now. I don't care what the situation but I wouldn't take advantage of the situation. There is a way to ask for a favor. She was doing it in a very spoiled way (with the laugh and snicker). He was trying to nap because it's late in the morning (maybe 2am) and she wasn't in active labor yet [ Reply | More ]

pg is one thing... being in active labor is another (and from your op it wasn't clear that she was being a brat and not in active labor) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Any other schools completed filled up with 99s (other than siblings) besides Anderson, Nest and PS 9? I know there was some debate on whether Tag was (based on what was seen on Inside Schools) and it looks like 116 has 99s and 98s, LL goes down to 97 and 166 to 96. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I got the impression that LL was mostly 99s. Also, someone posted somewhere that they had a 99, had listed TAG as third choice, and ended up getting into only their FOURTH choice. Which suggests TAG was filled with 99s. [ Reply | More ]

I think yield will be fascinating. If in fact Tag and Nest in particular drew rankings from the people without district options, I wonder how many will turn them down because of commute (particularly since they will have the option of using their score for first grade entry programs next year). Any calculus they used for yield could dramatically change for the future. [ Reply | More ]

Some are prepared to do a crazy commute for NEST. Someone posted on the Yahoo board about commuting down there from Upper Upper Manhattan. Clearly for some, it's worth it and they have that kind of flexibility in their daily lives. [ Reply | More ]

yes, they are in Manhattan so this is their entry year. The same is not true in outer boroughs (other than Brooklyn) and I have seen a number say they have decided against it. And frankly while they have fewer options than people with K entry programs this year, they have much better options for next year for district programs. People with entry K who turn down a citywide this year need to fight for limited district or citywide 1st grade seats next year. [ Reply | More ]
