Does no one here understand that overserving the UMC is exactly the POINT of G&T? It's that or lose them to the suburbs. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Look, I believe in helping the poor. But they will always have a struggle with public education. They are certainly not better off in a city that the upper middle class is fleeing en masse. I'd love to hear the argument to the contrary. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if I'd call it "overserving", but yes, it is a middle-class retention program. If the City loses it's middle class (and it came close in the 1970's), it runs the real risk of becoming a city of extremes - those who can afford to totally insulate themselves from everyday life and those who cannot afford to move anywhere else. At that point, the extremely wealthy will also leave the City (essentially what happened to Detroit) - when they go, their support of the institutions that are the major tourist draws in NYC will go with them (both for-profits like restaurants and non-profits like MoMA). NYC can't afford any of this - not the loss of the tax base from middle class incomes or from the loss of the tourist industry in NYC. It's not all about the best educational policy, it's about what's best for the City as a whole. [ Reply | More ]

I completely understand that. That's why it was created, to bring UMC families back to public school. The disparity has gotten nuts though. [ Reply | More ]

I like to think this to be a side effect of the G&T program. Not its prime purpose. [ Reply | More ]

It's not a side effect. It's not solid educational policy, but it is public policy for NYC as a whole. If the MC leaves and the wealthy follow them out, the city fails entirely. [ Reply | More ]
