I'm fine with having a babysitter. np: ita. i usually use nanny to differentiate between someone you have for FT childcare and babysitter for someone you use on an ad hoc or very PT basis. So the person who cares for dc during the week is our "nanny" but the woman we use for Saturday nights is our "sitter" although I'm pretty sure she works FT during the week for someone else as a "nanny". i think there are people who think that a babysitter is just there to supervise sleeping kids while you go on a date - like the neighbor's 15 yo, whereas a nanny is supposed to be "raising the child" and therefore should be experienced, credentialed, etc. so saying that people have a babysitter and not a nanny is a way to say that parents are essentially hiring inexperienced, uncredentialed childcare providers. The OLSAT tests cognition. Its operation definitions and content are very similar to what you'd see with an IQ test, though technically it's not an IQ test. The BRSA is a school-readiness test and is pretty different from an IQ test. It asks about stuff like letters, shapes, colors, numbers. A score of 57% isn't so awful. 50% is the average score nationally. [ Reply | More ]

brsa is numbers, colors and shapes. if she has learned these from you or preschool or wherever, she likely was able to perform on the test. its a matter of exposure and learning. olsat is more reasoning, verbal and visuospatial tasks, etc. she may not do as well becasue exposure and enrichment are not what is being tested, although having some practice with the concepts may help. Take the results with a grain of salt. My dc took it last year, and got 90+%, but was waitlisted. Dc took it again this year, and got around a 67%, mostly because she got 2/3 of the answers wrong on the non-verbal part. Did my dc get dumber over a year? No, she aced her report card and excellent reviews from her teacher. Just probably didn't know how to bubble an answer sheet, never really having done one in 1st grade. Or she just had a bad day. I will never know since the DOE has not answered my appeal to see her test. A good score on OLSATs is likely very accurate, but a poor score does not mean that you do not have a bright child. My 3yo stays in bed. I go nuts with the 45 minute book/story routine. That would drive me crazy. HOw long has this been going on? [ Reply | More ]

Have you tried not going back in? That is what I would do. He may be trying to engage you and when he sees that you are not engaging, he may just get in bed and go to sleep. [ Reply | More ]

If he has to get up earlier in the fall, his body will probably adjust after a bit and he'll go to sleep earlier. I'd leave it alone. [ Reply | More ]

just wondering, does he still nap? my dd did this when she was around 3, and would stay up for 2 hours after bedtime, like she had a second wind. once she stopped napping, she was in bed and asleep by 7:30. [ Reply | More ]

no nap and he is constantly in motion from the moment he wakes up, so I know he is pooped when I put him to bed. in fact, his eyes were fluttering during book reading tonight- the second wind arrives when the door shuts. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] A friend is renting an apt. and his landlord told him today he has to leave because they need to renovate in Aug. He has the option to leave for a few months and come back. He doesn't have enough funds to look for another apt. with leaving a deposit. Are there any rights he has a renter to not move out? 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

that sucks. I would call 311 and ask. I hope someone on here knows the laws for renters [ Reply | More ]

It's hard to get someone out in NYC, anyway. Unless he's been to court, he should stay put. Call 311 like above poster to see the rights. It sounds fishy. Why in the world do they need to renovate. That is done between tenants. If it is rent stabilized, maybe the landlord is trying to get the rent up. [ Reply | More ]

Did he sign a lease? If yes - he can stay. If no, see. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on his agreement. If it's a month-to-month lease, then he has to leave. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am flying with my 6 mo later this month. I bought him a seat, so no reason to revisit that issue. What is the rule of thumb for packing? One outfit and diaper for him per hour of flight time and one outfit for me per hour of flight time? Been a long time since I did this. TIA. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
