[ - ] my 15yo dd came out as a lesbian to me, i've always been open-minded, but i have to say i was completely shocked by this and i even wonder if this is just a phase bc she is so young. i feel awful even thinking of it as a phase and while i didn't tell her any of this and i support her, i still don't know what the next step is. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Is your kid sexually active or is this an emotional revelation she's chosen to share with you? It would be concerning to me if my 15 y/o was sexually active-with anyone of any gender. At 15 I was convinced I'd grow old with a hot, older woman and we'd adopt at least one child. I'd only groped and kissed girls but had real pining crushes on others. The place and time were long ago(I'm 45)and there was a much less open atmosphere among youth culture, [ Reply | More ]

in terms of being gay-esp if you were a girl. I look around today and am amazed at the overall acceptance of gay youth culture and sense of community. 15 is so experimental, exploratory and a time of huge realization that we'll be able to interpret and identify ourselves through our choices. Your kid may be a lesbian or not but she sounds like she has chosen to bring some important self-realization to you. How cool for you Mom. Don't rush to help her define it; hang in there and keep being someone safe and loving with whom she can share, [ Reply | More ]

Well, i completely agree that it may seem 'trendy' but it may be a lot of things-including that she's a lesbian. I mostly agree that the most important aspect of this is, your 15 yr old is having sex. You need to deal with that as being of primary importance; Safe sex is a nearly oxymoronic term when discussing the level of emotional immaturity at her age. You're her parent and I assume you try to set the parameters of what is acceptable behavior; are you ok w/her being sexually active? Were you unaware that she has had a 'long-term girlfriend'? Do you know her friends or spend time with them? It's pretty tricky stuff, as teens-particularly girls- can more easily project a false maturity. Get yourself some conferral w/ a therapist, so you can move ahead as her Mom-not her 'accepting Buddy". There is a danger of assuming that being a sexually active lesbian teen is somehow safer than being sexually active w/ the opposite sex. Kids think crazy stuff and she's a kid; her partners are likely, also young. and [ Reply | More ]

you'll need some objective help to maintain connection with your position as her mother and not her 'cool with it Buddy'. Good luck to you both. Please please please listen to her.... whether it is or is not a phase is not important. If it is in a couple of years she'll come home with a boyfriend and that will be that. If it is not a phase a negative reaction from you could do permanent damage not only to the relationship between you and her but also to her. Over 90% of gay youth attempt suicide at some point and over 60% of the homeless population in America that is under the age of 25 is gay and is homeless because their families turn them away. I came out at 15 and was reasonably fortunate to have semi accepting parents. I know many who were not so lucky. I don't think you should feel guilty for thinking this is a phase though, she is very young. Jst don't tell her you think it. Just listen, guide her morally (encourage responsible sexual behavior or abstinence depending on your values), educate her, go with her to a pride event or a pflag meeting (actions speak louder then words) just love her like you always have! [ - ] Does your dc's school request the kids keep a reading log of some kind over the summer? If so, what kind of log and what grade will dc enter in September? Mine is going in to 2nd and all they asked is for dc to write a list of titles of what she reads, and it's optional. Should I nudge her to write a little about what she's read or leave it alone? It seems like most of her friends at other schools are asked to do a lot more. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My dc's school requests rising 2nd graders read 3-5 books from reading list, keep a log (title and author) and write and illustrate a short report about one of them (with a form for this). I like the idea of the picture, because many kids express themselves by drawing. I also think authors are important to note, because a child will often want to read more books by an author of a book they like. [ Reply | More ]

Barnes and Noble does a summer reading log (you should be able to pick it up at any store). I think it's for maybe 8 books: the child reads each book and then writes about their favorite part (just a sentence or two). When you turn it in to Barnes and Noble, the child is presented with a list of grade-appropriate books, and they can pick one for free. Not that I condone rewarding your child for reading...but let's be realistic, after a long day of camp, it's pretty hard to motivate your kids to do much of anything. [ Reply | More ]

Just wondering why you got the test in the first place? Was it just a general check up for your pregnancy? Are you having thyroid symptoms?? Fatigue, unusual weight gain, etc?? I have more experience with hypothyroid than I would ever like to. Thyroid problems are horrible!!! As far as the TSH, it really should be less than 2.5 even though the norm for that lab says 5.5 It was recently changed for the norm to be less than 3.5. That labs numbers are outdated. I would say if you aren't having symptoms, your TSH is fine. That note is a "standard note" to cover their a**. :) [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if this is the same thing as we were never given a full "diagnosis", but both of my DS's have had issues with processing certain things like loud noises, too much input at once (like at a circus or loud busy indoor playground thing, for example), and they had problems with knowing "where" they were spatially, if that makes sense. They did OT for a few months and had certain exercises to do, but it was certainly nothing ont he autism spectrum and nothing that required medication. It turns my stomach and it gets me angry. I've seen grown men (40's) that I know have dds look at 16yr olds with this attack look on them and it skeeves me out. I can't understand how a man who has a dd and wouldn't want another doing this to their dd..does this to other young girls. Just disgusting [ Reply | More ]

exactly! do you feel that way toward your dh as well, since he's 'one of them'? [ Reply | More ]

I don't feel like that, but the idea of my DH with his mouth on my breasts repulses me. [ Reply | More ]

OP: OK, I think I can verbalize this better, now. Last night, I saw the Christie Brinkley 'scandal' on the news and they talked about her DH's pecadilloes and his quote to the effect: "I never let my children know about my sexual interests". Well they know all about it NOW you loser! This thinking started when the Spitzer scandal broke - and how he was into young girls, despite being the father of 2 DDs. It made my blood curdle. My DH has gotten caught with funk on the 'net as well - so now I lump the whole lot of them into the 'animal bucket'. Most are so un-evolved that they can't control impulse-one would think/hope being a father of a girl might help change this. But, alas, no. [ Reply | More ]

i would think being the father of attractive teenage girls would only make the attraction to young girls stronger. i assume most men are deeply attracted to their daughters, and deeply horrified by it. Sorry. [ Reply | More ]

This is an interesting viewpoint...that their impulses -instead of being more controlled when they become fathers of DD's - actually become less controlled b/c of the subconscious attraction. How very creepy! This frighteningly reinforces my belief in the 'animal bucket'. [ Reply | More ]

do you really doubt it? i kind of think that's human nature. we're not as evolved as we think we are. most dads would never, ever, ever want to act on their attraction, i'm sure, but other teenage girls, who are, let's face it, extremely attractive, are fair game. [ Reply | More ]

np: I really think you are disturbed. There is a vast difference between your DH looking at a little porn and a man with a sex addition/unnatural attraction to young women. [ Reply | More ]

LOL - yes I am clearly very disturbed by this! You didn't have access to the computer before saying DH was 'looking a little porn'. I think the idea is that they all on some level have an attraction to young women, and the stories in the news hit a little too close to home. Disturbed. yes. [ Reply | More ]

welcome to my world. Not saying he is a molester by any stretch for goodness sakes...but his sexuality (normal, male-wired) has become more disturbing to me as my little girl gets older. Unrelated to any danger to her - just in general. [ Reply | More ]

The Sports Authority is having a sale on all the sporty suits. Nike, Speedo etc. I find I like them the best now since they use a lot of lycra! Plus DC can't pull anything off when we're swimming. [ Reply | More ]
