Friends child was just diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. What is that? Her DC seems very bright etc. Is it related to Autism? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it's on teh autism spectrum but is not full-blown autism. most kids respond very well to occupational therapy. [ Reply | More ]

it can be managed, some with drugs, some, like i said, with occupational therapy. or a combination of both. [ Reply | More ]

It used to be called SID (Sensory intergration Disorder), they changed it to SPD - mainly because doctors didn't recognize SID - I'm not sure SPD is rec dx either. It's basically the flavor of the month dx and is way over done. Having said that, there are some children to whom a sound is an explosion, a touch is a forceful hit etc. Yes, they can and often do outgrow. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if this is the same thing as we were never given a full "diagnosis", but both of my DS's have had issues with processing certain things like loud noises, too much input at once (like at a circus or loud busy indoor playground thing, for example), and they had problems with knowing "where" they were spatially, if that makes sense. They did OT for a few months and had certain exercises to do, but it was certainly nothing ont he autism spectrum and nothing that required medication. They are both very smart boys and now they're fine. [ Reply | More ]

my son has this - does OT and helps a lot - like anything else, there are extreme and non extreme versions - i guess there is a spectrum for it. he is just overly sensitive to everything. very bright, very social, very happy - just get's upset easily by crowds, loud noises, but functions fine w/ OT and knowing when to say he needs space or a break. he's 4 1/2 [ Reply | More ]

Mine are now 9 and 7 and it isn't an issue any longer. I always wonder, however, what kids did before this was "helped". They probably just outgrew it on their own. Did I pay a ton of money for OT for something they would outgrow ? [ Reply | More ]

good question - have they totally outgrown it? because sometimes i see sensitive adults ( like my husband) and think he has it/ or had it, and just was never diagnosed, since no knew about this years ago [ Reply | More ]

After my son was diagnosed (and received OT for a time) my husband recognized his own symptoms. DH is still overly sensitive to sounds, some touch...could have used early intervention! [ Reply | More ]

It is the latest debate in psychology. Many doctors think it is an empty diagnosis for a non-existent problem. Your friend should do her research, then be prepared for a lot of people to disagree with whatever the final conclusion may be. She will need thick skin. [ Reply | More ]
