i actually always preferred "babysitter" to "nanny" - more descriptive and less pretentous [ Reply | More ]

^^also - my fabulous sitters prefer "babysitter" since they are not career nannies - they are typically people in transition and upwardly mobile in some way. [ Reply | More ]

I'm fine with having a babysitter. My sitter has been with the family for 7 years, helps with homework, is a lot of fun, can be trusted to recognize when my ds is symptomatic and administers his asthma medicines, and is utterly reliable. I'm lucky to have her. Not sure what would be different if I had a "nanny." [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I understand she would have credentials. I meant, in her day to day responsibilities, and with confidence in her abilities to take care of my kids. [ Reply | More ]

lol! was thinking the same thing. I use the word nanny as a general term. never thought about it being status thing or pretentious. its just the word used here in nyc. most people I know with nannies are far from glamorous or socially ambitious. ridiculous point to make here. meaningless. I think the poster must not live in NYC; it seems that she doesn't realize that NYers use nanny and babysitter interchangeably; has nothing to do with pretentious. [ Reply | More ]

np: ita. i usually use nanny to differentiate between someone you have for FT childcare and babysitter for someone you use on an ad hoc or very PT basis. So the person who cares for dc during the week is our "nanny" but the woman we use for Saturday nights is our "sitter" although I'm pretty sure she works FT during the week for someone else as a "nanny". nnp. I use the terms the same way. Nanny = full time, regular hours. Babysitter = part time, irregular hours. I wonder what the distinction is in OP's mind? [ Reply | More ]

I think has this definition: Nanny: hired by someone who loves her children. Babysitter: hired by someone who doesn't love her children - a stupid slatternly individual. [ Reply | More ]

i think there are people who think that a babysitter is just there to supervise sleeping kids while you go on a date - like the neighbor's 15 yo, whereas a nanny is supposed to be "raising the child" and therefore should be experienced, credentialed, etc. so saying that people have a babysitter and not a nanny is a way to say that parents are essentially hiring inexperienced, uncredentialed childcare providers. newsflash: it may sound pretentious to a smug, mouthbreathing f&cktard like you, but it's actually a useful designation. a babysitter is the college girl who sits on saturday night. a nanny is a full-time employee. you all are a bunghole. [ Reply | More ]

yes, very few nannies from what i can tell. lots of full time babysitters out there chatting on the phone, rocking the stroller with their foot while sitting on the park bench hanging with their friends. oh yeah, they also complain a great deal about the classes the moms sign the children up for that require babysitter's presence and participation (clapping, singing, dancing, it's too much!)
