A friend is renting an apt. and his landlord told him today he has to leave because they need to renovate in Aug. He has the option to leave for a few months and come back. He doesn't have enough funds to look for another apt. with leaving a deposit. Are there any rights he has a renter to not move out? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

that sucks. I would call 311 and ask. I hope someone on here knows the laws for renters [ Reply | More ]

Sure there are rights. Is he being evicted? [ Reply | More ]

It's hard to get someone out in NYC, anyway. Unless he's been to court, he should stay put. Call 311 like above poster to see the rights. It sounds fishy. Why in the world do they need to renovate. That is done between tenants. If it is rent stabilized, maybe the landlord is trying to get the rent up. [ Reply | More ]

Did he sign a lease? If yes - he can stay. If no, see. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on his agreement. If it's a month-to-month lease, then he has to leave. [ Reply | More ]
