This question is going to seem way out of date, but believe it or not we JUST got our OLSAT scores. My dd did unbelievably badly, but in a weird way: she got a 57% on the OLSAT, a 92% on the BRSA. I know some here are very informed about these tests: any ideas what might account for this kind of disparity? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

The BRSA tests basics - shapes, numbers and colors. The OLSAT tests learning readiness. Neither are an IQ test. I think the OLSAT is a strange test and it is possible for very bright kids to bomb it if they are creative thinkers. I would not give it a second thought. [ Reply | More ]

maybe she just didn't care about the test. you know your DD. You know if she has special needs or not -- ignore the test! throw that paper away and move on! [ Reply | More ]

I know, it's just weird that the scores were SO different... 92 and 57?!? That's really radically different. [ Reply | More ]

np. It's really not so surprising. They're completely different tests. [ Reply | More ]

The OLSAT tests cognition. Its operation definitions and content are very similar to what you'd see with an IQ test, though technically it's not an IQ test. The BRSA is a school-readiness test and is pretty different from an IQ test. It asks about stuff like letters, shapes, colors, numbers. A score of 57% isn't so awful. 50% is the average score nationally. [ Reply | More ]

^^ Sorry. That should have been operational definition. [ Reply | More ]

it's worse than anyone else's I've ever heard, and my kid is definitely not dumber than every other kid I know who took this test, most of whom scored above 80% at least. [ Reply | More ]

She could have had a bad day or maybe she didn't feel comfortable with the person that administered the test. I would not worry. [ Reply | More ]

I can understand that she might have had a bad day, I would just think that then she'd do poorly on BOTH tests. [ Reply | More ]

I think the BRSA is given first, so she may have lost steam. [ Reply | More ]

brsa is numbers, colors and shapes. if she has learned these from you or preschool or wherever, she likely was able to perform on the test. its a matter of exposure and learning. olsat is more reasoning, verbal and visuospatial tasks, etc. she may not do as well becasue exposure and enrichment are not what is being tested, although having some practice with the concepts may help. Please don't stress about this too much. It's a snapshot of 45 minutes of your dc's life. That's all. There's a HUGE element of crapshoot in all this testing of 4 yos. [ Reply | More ]

Take the results with a grain of salt. My dc took it last year, and got 90+%, but was waitlisted. Dc took it again this year, and got around a 67%, mostly because she got 2/3 of the answers wrong on the non-verbal part. Did my dc get dumber over a year? No, she aced her report card and excellent reviews from her teacher. Just probably didn't know how to bubble an answer sheet, never really having done one in 1st grade. Or she just had a bad day. I will never know since the DOE has not answered my appeal to see her test. A good score on OLSATs is likely very accurate, but a poor score does not mean that you do not have a bright child. lol! dc got 70 on sb, 98 on erbs and 99 on olsat 2 years ago and ended up at anderson. we were so freaked by the sb score. really thought we had a dummy on our hands. luckily, anderson did not require the sb score when we applied. [ Reply | More ]

we had a kind of similar story; 86 on sb, 98 on erbs (didn't take olsat). fall birthday so took sb one year before erbs and worried dc would never get into a good school. felt such relief when we got the erb scores. [ Reply | More ]

Ignore it, seriously. I know people whose children got 30s on the OLSAT and are clearly very bright (have tested well elsewhere). [ Reply | More ]

Most kids do better on the BSRA (not BRSA). My daughter got a perfect score on that, and got a 75 on the OLSAT. [ Reply | More ]

Did the DOE provide any explanation for why you only got your scores now? [ Reply | More ]

BSRA takes 10-15 minutes to ask about stuff that really doesn't have to do with IQ. Not saying Olsat does, and olsat is kinda mind numbing. Having to sit through the whole thing to point at pictures. [ Reply | More ]
