Are you local? Do they have any other children? Don't just ask what you can do, just actually start doing things-- feed them, watch the other child(ren), clean their house, put out-of-town visitors up in YOUR house, mow their lawn etc etc. It almost outs too much of a burden on them to figure out what you could do to help. Just do it. [ Reply | More ]

This is the thing about pools accessible to small children. If something goes wrong, it will be a tragedy. There is no second chance. Also, I have found when vacationing with a lot of family members, everyone assumes that someone else is watching/with the children. This is not going to be a relaxing vacation for you. And really, who cares about the dogs. Strange priorities. [ Reply | More ]

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I think you ought to take a newborn in a cab (or any car) without a carseat. What if the car seat is installed? etc. [ Reply | More ]

As I said above, I'm not advocating that you don't. Just pointing out that, 1. I don't think this is as hard and fast a rule as people think; 2. so what? Unless the hospital has somebody trained in car seat installation and is going to come out and make sure it is installed, why get involved at all. And 3. to tell me I need a car seat to walk my kid home... please. I guess if I felt like the hospitals had really perfected L&D and the whole maternity floor experience, then they should think about branching out to traffic safety. But since they seem to screw up their core mission so regularly maybe they should focus on that first. [ Reply | More ]

they have a ton of mandates for baby safety since for too much of the population, that's one of the few reliable contacts with the healthcare system. its the same reason they tell you not to shake your baby when you are checking out. I don't imagine they will stop you from leaving, especially if you say baby is being walked home. but they will ask. [ Reply | More ]

you do not have to have a car seat in a nyc cab. we don't own a car and do not plan on buying a car seat since we normally just use the subway. however, it was suggested to us to borrow an infant car seat just for the trip home from the hospital since we will be taking a cab and not the MTA. maybe with a toddler for a short distance in a cab w/o car seat is okay, but not a newborn. How judgemental are you? Do you have 2 little boys? If not, it can be crazy. Also, it is often easier for a nanny because her only job is to make sure that the kids are safe & taken care of. A mom is often watching the kids, cooking dinner or other meals, cleaning the house, doing bills, answering the phone, laundry, etc.. Sounds like you may have only one or may not have 2 highly active boys. [ Reply | More ]
