thanks. i think i need this. for the most part my DD is great and i should be grateful, however, it almost makes me less prepared to deal with misbehavior b/c i don't have much practice. i tend to let my anger build up and explode. not good. she's such a sweetheart but under lots of stress with a new move, new sibling, etc. however, i want her to behave. sometimes if i try to think of a punishment it just seems so arbitrary. last night ended so badly because of these things i mentioned. [ - ] Please help I really need some advice here. Do I cut the cord? My nanny, who has so far been great, has a lot of things going on in her life that aren't likely to change any time soon. It's been affecting the way she deals with dcs (4,1). She's short with them, takes them on extended errands, and dh saw her picking up 1 year old very roughly bc she had climbed on table. We have spoken to her, but she got very sulky. Do you think another big talk will help change things, or time to cut the cord? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I actually went through something similar recently and did cut the cord. As heartless as it sounds, you are not responsible for how she deals with her own life, but she is responsible for how she conducts herself at work. Since you know the problem is not going to remedy itself soon, I advise you to look for alternative help. It's hard, but her life is her own. [ Reply | More ]

The DEET free stuff is fine if you are trying to fend off your garden variety east coast mosquitos. i really feel for you - my mom's dog just died from lymphoma last week. we have been to my mom's house a lot this summer so i worry about what my daughter will ask next time we visit and how i will deal with it. it really is tough to lose a pet and i think that a lot of people (especially those who don't have them) don't realize how deep that loss can be. when i was little (maybe around 7) my cat died and my parents had a memorial service in the backyard. a lot of my friends came, as did some neighbors. we told stories about the cat. and you know what it was really helpful. i think when a pet dies it is just expected that we move on - i think having a memorial service where you share favorite stories, just as you would for a person, allows closure, and allows you to grieve for a best friend who has been there for you. i look back on that day and while it was a sad day - i remember laughing through tears over all the silly things that that cat did. and while you miss your pet terribly those memories will always be there to make you smile. my mom had to put her to sleep to. i think that's the decision that you don't want to make but you know you may have to because you don't want to see your pet in pain. my mom got a really nice sympathy card from the vet letting her know that she made the right decision. don't let yourself feel guilt about having to make that decision. my mom's dog had a pain patch for the tumor that was growing in her head pushing on her nasal passages, so it came to the point where the pain patch was just prolonging it. when you have to make that decision - know that you are making the right one. You can go to the OPT (office of pupil transportation) website, the rules are there. I think the bus ride could be long. At our school our pick up is about an hour before school starts and there are several stops before our stop. I know someone who is the last pick up in her route for a citywide and pick up is about 30 mins before school starts. I am sure there is a regulation about the max time a kid is supposed to spend on the bus, but don't know what it is. Also if you are eligible for a bus, you can choose a metrocard instead. I think you get a bus or metrocard for K if you live more than 1 mile away. If you live .5 miles or more away you get a metrocard (can't remember if that is free or reduced fare). The benefits shrink once the kids are older (I think third grade). [ Reply | More ]

From what I understand, my dc will be picked up at 7:20 in our neighborhood to be at NEST by 8:00, in time for breakfast before school starts. The commute home is a tiny bit shorter - bus leaves at 3:25, off the bus at 3:50. They did say that the schedule is subject to change depending on how many kids decide to take the bus from which area. [ Reply | More ]

Both my kids bused to Anderson from an outer borough. Private bus = $2500 yr. Best money I ever spent. City-issued Metrocard is full fare if you live far enough away and continues through high school. Bus doesn't work for your kid then don't do it. Mine enjoyed it as social time with other neighborhood kids who also went to Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

Where are you? What private bus company is it? Do you have to organize this yourself with other A family? New A parent looking for solution... [ Reply | More ]

Also very curious about the bus to A. I think I heard that currently the only private bus is from Riverdale. [ Reply | More ]

Nah, first time I have posted re NEST. I wouldn't have even considered it because of the distance, we live in the UES, but when DC got a 99 DH bought into the G&T hype and I agreed to tour. It is okay not horrible. We would have considered it if we lived nearby, but we both felt that it was not special enough to put such a young child on a bus for 40 minutes to an hour each way. I felt the same about many private schools I toured. Frankly, I didn't see much difference between Nest and those schools. Oh, yeah there was one difference - about $30,000 worth of difference. [ Reply | More ]

That's nothing. Typical commute - kids in the burbs do it all the time. [ Reply | More ]

Can I ask how you got this info? Starting K in the fall and haven't heard any word about bus schedules, or what Nest's plan is there. [ Reply | More ]

Dh got it when he registered, plus the probable pickup spot, but they told him everything was subject to change. Does anyone know when bus service actually begins? [ Reply | More ]
