a dh: You have a right to tell him how you feel. He has a right to behave like an adult. This includes making adult decisions, like who his friends are. I just saw it. DO NOT take your kid. There are MANY examples but I'll give you one: The Joker holds a knife in a guy's mouth and very slowly tells the guy the story about how when Joker was a boy his drunk father sliced the corners of his mouth open to create a smile. DO NOT take your five year old! TONS of violence, scary characters....don't take the 7 year ld either. Seriously, I'm 35 and it was hard for me to process. It's 3 hours long, it's very intense, it's loud, it's violent, the plot is hard to follow, one guy gets his face half burnt off and they show it....don't take your kids. [ Reply | More ]

i'm sorry. i have had bad and strange experiences with women who went to women's colleges that i have never had with other women. they are super intelligent, competent, gracious, etc. until that moment when they sense something in me (what, I dont know) - then everything swerves into this strange, defensive competition (?? or something, i don't know what). they are very quick with undermining comments, veiled insults, etc. and i am not always sure if they realize that they are suddenly being unkind. it feels like some sort of defense mechanism that switches on automatically. i have ONLY had this problem with women who went to women's colleges. i am not saying they are all like this - but the experiences i have had all had the same "flavor" in that i didn't quite understand what where they were coming from. they are also verrryyy free with dirty looks. We aren't in NY so the super scrutiny & ERB stuff doesn't apply. But I will say that my oldest is very tough to parent at home. But all reports from the outside world are that he's fantastic. He is a model student at school. Extra classes he's taken he's extremely focused and diligent. Never sassy. I know that he acts up at home because he feels safe with us and is testing limits. But it's frustrating sometimes. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, we're not dealing w/ the nutty NYC thing (though where we are can be slightly intense--lots of money & educated, smart, successful people around). I can totally related to this post. My child who gets "rave reviews from the public" is very high maitnenance, stubborn, and whiny at home. Others see him as easy, go with the flow, and compliant. I belive it is true that kids save their most challenging behavior for those they know who love them b/c they feel safer with parents. I'm more relaxed w/ #2 and it helps all around. On the milestones--it's great that her receptive skills are strong--that's so important. The motor stuff can develop later. And you know, if you need to get her help down the road it's available. It's not the end of the world. My oldest ended up needing speech therapy from age 2-5. Hang in there. [ Reply | More ]

Try not to compare. So hard I know, but it doesn't help. My oldest didn't walk until very late. Was very, very quiet. Very clunky in his movement. Not an adventuresome sort at all. He's 6 now and great--handsome, bright, active. My second is on the opposite end of things--very, very quick with everything, extraordinarily verbal and showing crazy cognitive skills. It's just different. They are both precious. If I had compared him to a kid like her when he was little I would have been bummed. Just love what's great about your DD, talk to her, etc. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF (it doesn't help her if you don't) and keep up the good work. [ Reply | More ]

So cute. Welcome, oh clueless one. It just doesn't work that way. I predict that a year from now you will be coming here telling us that you are moving to the burbs b/c ds had a "bad tester" and missed the A cutoff by 1 point. He'll be accepted to mulitple TT's, but you are concerned about the privileged lifestyle influences, so you are rejecting them & you're really excited about moving to Summit. [ Reply | More ]

what was bizarre about the testing outcomes? Is this 5th grade, btw? [ Reply | More ]

yes. State shifted (over past few years) cutoff for level 4 to top 4% instead of 10%. This increased the number of kids in level 3 and blurred the 90% line, which determines HCHS testing eligibility. This year a child needed to score no more than one question 'wrong' to stay in level 4. [ Reply | More ]

That happens every couple of years. Never affects the number testing for Hunter. Top 10% still remains about the same population. The standardized tests are always graded on that crazy curve. Top 10% will always be top 10%. [ Reply | More ]

Right. But the state does not give a top 10% cutoff number. You have to wait for HCHS to announce it. It varies every year but is usually easier to suss out because the top 10% aligns better with the level 4 cutoff. Not so this year. [ Reply | More ]

np - So you're not saying that the kids who deserve to be considered for Hunter HS won't be - just that you can't figure it out before they announce the cut-off. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. Some years double fours have not been enough whereas last year, and some others, a high three on one test (English I think) was sufficient to qualify. The state numbers (700-800) have to be crunched by HCHS, which invites the top 10% to test. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Is that really true? I have to be skeptical since my dc scored 4s on both 5th grade ELA and Math tests this yr (not really a VBA), but I assumed it wasn't all that uncommon. [ Reply | More ]

Well, it used to be more common than it is now. Look at the state charts for specific info but the level 4 english score cutoff has risen to narrow that group to less than 5% of testers. Can't figure out why but it's a fact. Your child will certainly qualify for testing. She'll bring a letter home from school. [ Reply | More ]

Great, it's best if people who aren't interested don't clog the process for those who are! 2000 kids are invited to test for 120 spots. You'll make it 1999. [ Reply | More ]

IMO this is actually more about high school - and not worrying about HS admissions - than it is about middle school. But of course, you and dc can definitely not apply! [ Reply | More ]

Usually people who say they're not applying actually are. Just saving face if it doesn't work out. Understandable but transparent on testing day when those parents & kids are in line with you outside the building. Then they say they won't go even if they get a spot. Then you see them on new students' day... [ Reply | More ]

They'll post it when they get around to it. It's only a priority to a very narrow subset and is not crucial to their educational mission to get this info out any sooner than late Fall. [ Reply | More ]

Last year: 705 ELA, 732 Math but this year will be different so if your kid is in the 700-750 range on either test, it's an unknown for a while yet. Above 750 on both tests seems to be a safe bet you'll be invited. [ Reply | More ]

This year's Math seemed to be easier - more 4s, so cutoff will probably be higher. The ELA this year was harder, so cutoff will probably be lower. [ Reply | More ]
