He sits there for the whole 8:30 to 10:00 street cleaning period and he is a JERK. I want him to stop parking there and blocking the hydrant. what is the difference in a moving van parked outside your home, or a delivery truck parked outside your home in the exact same spot? Sounds like you just don't like him. I'd let this one go. He is not causing you any harm - and if the fire truck pulls up either he will move his car or they will run the hose the both back windows while he sits there (saw them to that to a car with no driver) [ Reply | More ]

In my neighborhood people are considerate. If a delivery truck needs to pull over quickly, you move your car for 2 secs. You double park for a moment, let the delivery or pick up happen, then pull back into the spot. A van or truck can't double park because they will block traffic but a passenger car can. OR AGAIN: I just looked it up: I was wrong. In NYC it is legal to load or unload packages at curbside and to drop off or pick up passengers but IT IS NOT LEGAL to "wait" in a no parking zone. The 30' stretch at a fire hydrant is a no parking zone by definition (15 ft on either side). So, by a strict definition -- this guy is breaking the law. I'd still find something else to worry about but you certainly have a legal argument. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe this will put things in perspective: I really hate on of the men who works in my building (for reasons too long to even start to explain here). Every morning I would see him out front or in the lobby cleaning. I used to complain everytime he even looked at me the wrong way, let alone when I saw him doing something he was not supposed to do. Finally I realized that he was taking up more energy than he is worth, that I was getting nowhere with my complaints, and that I am a far better off person in my life than he is. Now I just chuckle when I see him scraping gum off the sidewalk and I pretend he is some stranger on the street. [ Reply | More ]

I doubt you ever tried to park a car with alternate side of the street parking. Its hard. Its almost like a second job. The guy probably works nights, is hot and tired and just trying to survive like most of us. I doubt you are a ray of sunshine towards him either. Usually these encounters are a two way street. So you COULD sit there with a video camera and get him, his plate and his car for the entire time and trot off to the police station - but that sort of thing sometimes gets people killed - and I"m not sure that would be worth it. Or you could just breath, put it in perspective and go about enjoying your life and your children. [ Reply | More ]

The day my daughter's bed was being delivered, I went up to his car. The truck was waiting and I was there with my infant and 4 year old and he was on the cell phone. He ignored me and gave me the "on sec" finger for 5 minutes while we all waited. Then he rolled down his window about 2 inches only and said "What do you want?" i said "Excuse me sir, but I'm having a piece of furniture delivered to this building and I was hoping you could move your car up for a moment and let the truck unload." he said "No, this is where I park." So I said, "It would only be for a seccond to let the guys unload my daughter's bed and then youcould have the spot back. It's not a legal spot anyway." and he said, "No, I park here. I always park here." and he rolled up his window again. He's there two or three times a week. So one day I stopped and said, "You know, there is a lot of space to wait on this side of the street. Would you mind not blocking the hydrant? There are families that live in this building with children." and he ignored me. So I said, "Sir, did you hear me?" and he said, "Get the hell out of here. OP: No, you're wrong. They needed to pull in for 5 minutes to unload the boxes onto the sidewalk. There were three workers, two to put the bed together and one to drive the car. They didn't need to park, they needed to unload and that is the area in front of the door to the building. The hydrant. Even if there was no hydrant we would have asked "please pull out for 5 minutes and then back right back in". We just had to get the boxes out of the truck and onto the sidewalk. ^^^ this poster is not the poster of "What right..." post. (That was me.) I agree with above though. I mean when you have a block of double parked cars in Brownstone Brooklyn 'cause of alternate side reg.s it is pretty hard to rationally argue that this one guy is such a danger to society that the NYPD ought to get involved. NYC is hard enough to live in. [ Reply | More ]

And you're trying to be the owner of the street, in front of a building, in which you own an apt, to which you have no legal right. Yet Another complaining, entitled person whom is not from nyc, is all you could possibly be. If he's chapping your ass- then quit riding on his presence, call 311 and ask to be connected to the non-emergency number for the FDNY in your precinct. Tell them about it; they may be able to help- I just hope they aren't dealing w/your petty annoyance when a real fire breaks out. You sound like the nut here. [ Reply | More ]

Don't think about it if you Ped hasn't said anything. I have a big girl who has always been 90% for height and around 80% for weight. She ain't skinny but as long as the weight percentile is lower than the height I don't worry. And avoid anyone who is trying to make your kid anorexic - it's very easy to do. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Thinking about moving dd from her gifted school (she is going into first) - trying to decide between getting her skipped a grade in public or sending he back to her old montessori school where she will be in classes with kids her age & 2 years older (so she will have access to their level of learning as well). The Montessori is in gorgeous location, and she has friends there. BTW - she is about 2 yrs ahead of her level (which is why we would need to have her skipped) 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think you should probably seed advice and counsel from the principal of new school, and a social worker or guidance. The academic sounds like a no brainer, the social is probably the sticky part. Its hard and conventional wisdom swings back and forth. At this moment, it is against grade skipping - so you will have an uphill battle. [ Reply | More ]

Well... first, anyone can slap "montessori" in the name of the school - so they vary wildly. Second, the original and "true" motessori served a population not remotely related to our dc - I think any time you devise a system and implement it where there is none - you see improvement regardless. Same with skin care products. If you have no routine, and you start using company x's routine of course you will see positive results. But you will see them with y and z's prodcut too. But, I degress. I find the philosophy conterintuitive. I can't imagine a world where there is only one way to play with a toy. I don't care for the teacher/child relationship. But all of this is just me. I know plenty of people who adore their "montesssori" school. [ Reply | More ]

Really, truly madly... don't bother- your child or self with the lunacy of trying to do anything outside of a verbal, enriched and playful preparation. Enjoy yourselves; go to museums, walk in the city, talk to people together, let your kid see you listen- to them and others. Put away all the mighty mind, manipulative, memory, count-y , puzzle-y stuff at least a week before the erb. Burnout will bite you in the ass. [ Reply | More ]
