There's a place on Lex and 71 that does this -- or at least, I think they do they have a poster like this in the window. It's on the east side on the avenue (a few doors down from Oren's and French Sole) on the second floor. [ Reply | More ]

I am going through an existential thing myself lately (what am I doing? Who am I? Why am I here?) It's healthy. But I've learned to absorb myself with these thoughts for no more than a few minutes, maybe even a quarter of an hour, and then get away from them. [ Reply | More ]

I typically ignore any feelings I have and stuff everything down. I have been in therapy for months and still cannot talk about certain things but today is the first day reality hit where suddenly I could see clearly about how horrible the house I was raised in was. All the sudden I could not ignore it or push it away. If I had known that I would start feeling so blue by going to therapy I doubt I ever would have started. Working tomorrow will help get my mind off it. [ Reply | More ]

You know, I once heard a great analogy for therapy; in order for a better plant to grow, you must completely upturn the soil, till it, weed it, get rid of the old roots and any rocks found, and then after the soil is ready, a new seed can be planted anew, with a better plant in the end. Yes, babycenterish, but btdt and thought you'd like my bit of how it helped me. [ Reply | More ]

My DW and I are looking for a nanny now and want to be on the books. But we're having a hard time figuring out what the going-rate is: when somebody says that they pay their nanny $600/wk or $15/hr, I assume that they mean pre-tax and off the books. But that's an insane amount of $$ per year. What do you guys pay? [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Btdt moms w/ nannies- I need some advise pls. I'm a wohm & nanny has been w us for almost 1 yr. My 2 dc like her but she has a hard time disciplining them. She tries teaching db new things and is not overbearing at all which I like. Plus, I trust her w my kids & in my house. Problem is that she gets "offended" if I ask her if certain things got done around the house which I really don't do often. She also maintains the house pretty well but blows off things that we've asked her to do weekly. She doesn't cook and has a 2nd weekend job which we told her may be making her too tired for us. Just don't know if my thinking I could do better is legit or if my expectations are too high. Not looking to be flames, just need some constructive help. TIA 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

None of your beeswax what she does on weekends. Working with two children is more than enough. Housework on top is asking a bit much unless both kids are in school all day. [ Reply | More ]

agreed. There should be a clear (preferably written ) job description and regular performance reviews. Start this conversation with her by saying that it seems the two of you have different senses of what her job responsibilities are. Get it clear. Be sure that she has input and you both truly agree with what gets written out and when you'll sit down again. [ Reply | More ]

it all depends on the head and neck control. i think they recommend 4-6 mos, we moved dc around 4-5 mos. you could also try it in your apt or whatever before taking dc out and see how dc does [ Reply | More ]

Commitment to a child-centered education (what is studied grows out of a child's interests). Caroline Pratt's book I Learn From Children is a good book to read. She founded City and Country School. Teachers are called by first names at every progressive school I know. [ Reply | More ]

Block playing, imagination games for more grades; more art/less math; no homework usually until late elementary; curriculum centered around themes rather than skills (so, every subject might be studied through an in-depth year of birds, or native americans, etc.) It might include more mixed age group classes and more free time for kids to choose what they want to do/fewer transitions during the day. the focus is on process, not product. The focus on learning how to learn, rather than on what you learn. Progressive schools tend to study fewer areas, but study them more thoroughly. [ Reply | More ]

just get in and out with the bear....you can get off for less than $20 that way. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go to the section where the clothes are ....that will turn you $20 bear into an $80 bear. It'll be easy because once the bear is stuffed tell dd to get to the computer to do the birth cert, then to the check out to pay/pick up birth cert...then out the door...don't look back [ Reply | More ]
