[ - ] Since citywides are at least K-8, are they less likely to teach to the test? Seems they have great scores, so is it because they do what all publics do, and teach to the test, or do they just excel in teaching and the kids do well? 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

as with any school where the kids have greats scores.....it has far less to do with the teachers or teaching......the kids at the citywide K-8s would score 4's on the state tests even if they were at 41, 6, 116, 11, 40 or even at PS19 or 111. I am pretty sure if they took half the A kids and put them at 111 they'd still score 4s on the tests [ Reply | More ]

none of the 'better' schools spend a lot of time on the test......the amount of time spent on test prep is directly related to the student body. I'm sure PS111 spends far more time on test prep than PS6 [ Reply | More ]

That's the biggest fallacy of education - that bright kids will do well no matter where they are. Bright kids tune out if they're not being taught. As for the dumb standardized tests - all schools do some form of prep because the logic and content of these tests doesn't actually mirror what's taught and how (thank goodness, because they are deadly boring). Most schools buy a test prep workbook and review it for about a month prior one period a day. Some schools care more about the results. A K-8 would care less, in theory, because the test results aren't necessary for middle school admissions as the assume their population will stay through 8th grade. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, Lower Lab has the best scores and it is not a citywide. But remember regardless of the school, if the kid did well enough to qualify for a G&T he/she is probably good at standardized tests. [ Reply | More ]

well, we have one, but I wouldn't call it "public space" -- it's next to the laundry room, and is ensuite with my dh's home office (was intended as a nanny's room, but we don't have a nanny, so made it an office). We have two powder rooms on the first floor, one of which is intended for guests. But agree would be odd to have guests using full bathroom. [ Reply | More ]

op-not meant to be insulting in any way to anyone - but its really annoying when people think you are being arrogant when you are simply doing what other moms are doing - simply doing what you think addresses you kids needs. i hate having to pay for school - we moved for the great public school district in our area, but then we realized that the school could not deal with our kid. she is 6 and she reads these massive books (like 200 pages, Narnia etc), and the 1st grade (which is what she would enter) is only starting to learn to read...so what does a parent do? it's cool to have a kid that has any gifts or talents - but then again, we are sort of stuck having to provide special schooling for her. yes, I have an oversupply of milk and if my breasts get engorged for too long the milk ducts clog. I have been trying to wean myself from the pump, but DBs feedings have progressively become less and less since he is getting older and each time I try to pump less at night (0.75 oz per side) I end up getting a clogged duct (not because I'm pumping less, but I just happen to get one and then I am reluctant to pump less). op: that's what my parents are telling me. i just looked at a house that i like b/c every room is a really nice size plus there's a finished basement and a finished attic so i feel like there's actually room for our family to grow. the two drawbacks are there's no yard at all and there's no bathroom on the ground floor. my parents are like "...if there's no bathroom, it's not an option unless you can put one in asap". but i know i can't get everything i want. just not sure which ones are legitimate deal breakers. I'd say the absence of a bathroom is a real issue, having made the exact calculation you're considering and I lived to regret it. Think about when you have guests over, when your kids are really little, etc. Also think the main reason to move to the suburbs is to have a yard. Very important as your kids get older so friends will come over to play, too. [ Reply | More ]

It's easier all around having a bathroom on the main floor--for guests & with kids. op-i have no idea what the fluid is - the impact of the bowel contracting and being forced to excrete several times a week...this is what i am concerned about. in adults that can cause damage to a persons ability to "go" on their own...dependency. [ Reply | More ]

op-yes she is using and enema for gas - it has nothing to do with laxatives. in my research i found that enemas can cause a physical dependency. yes - laxatives do as well...i guess that's why you got confused [ Reply | More ]

I suspect you are not asking for your own dc. IF you are, just check in with your ped. If you are asking total strangers on UB to come back with ammo for your "friend" you need to take a moment and redefine friendship. [ Reply | More ]
