My 3 mo db sleeps goes to bed at 8pm and doesn't wake until 5am for a feeding. My milk supply was getting low so ped advised me to pump at 10:30 pm. Saw a LC today and she insisted I must also pump at 2am. Surely this is not necessary? Other moms of ebf babies go 6.5 hours without nursing, no problem? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Shouldnt your supply adjust even without the 10:30 pumping? If you are still nursing all day? [ Reply | More ]

That's what I assumed, but apparently supply went down once he started sleeping through the night. It is definitely low because he was fussy for three weeks, then devoured a 3 oz bottle right after a feeding. [ Reply | More ]

hmmm...Ok, well, personally I would not do this 2:30 am thing. part pf the beauty of the baby sleeping thru the night is that you can, too! I pumped exclusively for 12 wks, wish I had given up a little earlier [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I want to sleep through the night too! I think the LC is going overboard. [ Reply | More ]

I'd try a different LC. Have you tried Carolyn Migliore? She's very good, and gives very practical advice that allows moms to get sleep/have a life. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Speaking of having a life, the LC was appalled that my husband sometimes gives db a bottle of expressed milk so i can go out with friends. Acts like the supply problem is my fault. Give me a break! [ Reply | More ]

I had a lot of problems with clogged ducts so I am still pumping around 10:30-midnight and then again around 2:30-3:30 am. DS is 5 mos old now and goes to bed at 7pm and wakes at 6am so I don't need to keep pumping but I am very uncomfortable if I don't [ Reply | More ]

The reason you pump is so that your ducts don't clog? [ Reply | More ]

yes, I have an oversupply of milk and if my breasts get engorged for too long the milk ducts clog. I have been trying to wean myself from the pump, but DBs feedings have progressively become less and less since he is getting older and each time I try to pump less at night (0.75 oz per side) I end up getting a clogged duct (not because I'm pumping less, but I just happen to get one and then I am reluctant to pump less). Wow, that sounds like a real pain. Good for you for sticking with it. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks! I was determined to keep BF and I really enjoy it now, plus the occurrence of the clogged ducts is lessening and they are not as painful. I'm guessing that weaning is going to be a nightmare for me. [ Reply | More ]
