[ - ] Cloth diapers? I am seriously considering for DS #2 who is due in about 6 weeks? Anyone have any specific experiences or info that can help with this decision? We are in NYC - laundry room in basement. Less about saving money than env. impact - thanks 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm having same thought (although laundry is more convenient). I'm going to give "bum genius" diapers a try. They look easy - and cute. [ Reply | More ]

we used them b/c dc had a diaper allergy. They're really easy to use. We used Fuzzi Bunz but they're all pretty similar- velcro closures. I felt like the environmental impact part was sort of a wash (ha ha) just because of the amount of water I had to use to clean them. I ran them once through a cold wash for rinsing and then did a regular wash, and it just seemed like I was using so much water (and I live in So Cal, where water conservation is a much greater issue than landfill space). OP: Yeah, but this one is smarter to begin with & I am not going to make her go to the wacky Chinese school, where in a 2 hr session you can only leave to pee. I think that left a pretty bad taste in her mouth. For DD #2 only option is Citywide so apparently have to get 99. Prepping could make difference. Now will just do it in a kinder, gentler way. Well, if you believe your child will be easily w/in her depth in a slightly accelerated K curriculum, why prep? If she will not- why prep? I wasn't aware it was an illicit act to 'prep' kids for tests. I mean, the DoE makes that the core curriculum of most gen-ed in nyc; no? I never did it and always saw my child garner highest possible results. Perhaps you should give it a rest w/ the prep; they're your kids not your racehorses. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Yesterday, I was walking with my 3 yo son on the UES, near mad and 65th, and this lady makes this hand movementlike "get away from me" as my son and I walk passed. I really doubted this, and, as it seemed she was saying "first," i assumed she was confused and lost and looking for 1st avenue, rather than being mean. So I said the her "First avenue is that way" pointing. She again makes this movement for us to get out of her line of sight with this disgusted look on her face, to which I said, "I don;t know why I helped you, you are so unpleasant" and walked away. TO which she started screaming "FU*KING B*TCH, FU*KING B*TCH," down the block at me in this thick french accent.I know my part is that I engaged her, and I shouldn't have, but dayum! She was even dressed like this UES matron. really strange. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Tried to take a SWING at dh, too. We split up and dh followed guy (had called the police) as he pissed on every second car for the next 10 blocks. Cops, of course, didn't show. Also, I was recently walking in CP with my 2 yo dd and crazy guy said "you made it, don't molest it". Life in the city. [ Reply | More ]

Perhaps she had Tourette's and she knew she was about to spew profanities at you and your child which was why she was motioning for you to get out of the way. I've heard that these outbursts are very difficult to control but the people know when they're about to go off and try various methods to control them, which don't always work. My favorite was the guy who was compelled to yell the dreaded N word whenever he saw a person of color but had trained himself to say "nickles dimes quarters" in it's place. [ Reply | More ]

I have the same problem and just posted a few days ago - my 5 mo old won't nurse to sleep anymore and is a real pill to get to take a nap and once she is down for a nap, she's up every 45 min, sometimes 30 min., and if I'm lucky 1 hour. Driving me crazy. The key is to get them down before they become overtired, but if getting them to sleep requires BF and that no longer works, then you have to try something else. I tried a paci, giving her a burp cloth I was wearing, playing the crib musical toy and made sure the room is dark. I've had some success with this method so far, assuming it will take time for DD to adjust. [ Reply | More ]

^^ I've tried letting DD CIO for 5-10 min. but it just doesn't work and her crying escalates to screaming. However, I am a big proponent of CIO for 1-2 min. if it turns into fuss-it-out. Once she starts fussing, she quiets down and her fussiness gradually goes down in volume until she's asleep. (it's happening right now - music to my ears!) If DB is really fussy and crying on your shoulder then it will be hard to lay him down. Try to do a little activity or two that makes him smile for as little as 2 min. or longer, if he is not showing signs of overtiredness again. Then try to lay him down. You might have to repeat the sequence a few times, but I've found that I can't lay DD down if she was just recently crying and I have her on my shoulder. [ Reply | More ]

mine were 2.5 yo when they both dropped naps, but they weren't in camp at the time. sounds like your ds needs rest- I'd move up his bedtime dramatically- 6:30pm or 7. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Teachers at 3.5yo ds's school told me ds never plays with other kids, always stands off to the side or refuses to play with others. He is an only child, but plays well with just one or two kids at a time. Has trouble with groups it seems. He is otherwise friendly and chatty with adults, just prefers them to kids. Normal or should I worry? 1 Reply [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Please don't worry. I don't know why some teachers want to give moms a complex about their kids! Some thoughts: as your child gets older can you offer to be a playground monitor (that way you get to see firsthand what's up) and also do you have any reason to think there's anything wrong? If not, carry on. [ Reply | More ]
