Dd is heading to a citywide in September and we need to move to another apartment. The bus commuting time (and whether or not we'd be eligible for a bus) are key issues for us in the search, but I've had no luck getting any answers so far. Any parents with kids at Anderson / NEST / TAG / LL / SMS, or another public school that's not necessarily in the neighborhood have any personal bus information to share? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

What citywide? If you are moving anyway, why don't you just move near to the school? [ Reply | More ]

Anderson. The immediate area is just very expensive, so I was trying to expand my search a little bit. [ Reply | More ]

I would move to morningside Heights near Columbia Univ. Not extremely cheap, but cheaper than area around A. easy commute on subway, walking or bus. [ Reply | More ]

If you live in the borough of Manhattan you are entitled to public school busing. However, the commute may be long. My dc goes to a citywide, and while we didn't move close to it, she has several friends whose families moved near the school once their dc got accepted. Makes life a lot easier. [ Reply | More ]

I would just move near the school. If you have the option of moving, and see your family at the school for awhile, and like the area where it is located, and could get comparable housing, seems like a no brainer. [ Reply | More ]

You can go to the OPT (office of pupil transportation) website, the rules are there. I think the bus ride could be long. At our school our pick up is about an hour before school starts and there are several stops before our stop. I know someone who is the last pick up in her route for a citywide and pick up is about 30 mins before school starts. I am sure there is a regulation about the max time a kid is supposed to spend on the bus, but don't know what it is. Also if you are eligible for a bus, you can choose a metrocard instead. I think you get a bus or metrocard for K if you live more than 1 mile away. If you live .5 miles or more away you get a metrocard (can't remember if that is free or reduced fare). The benefits shrink once the kids are older (I think third grade). [ Reply | More ]

I also heard that there is a five miles maximum. No bus if the school is farther away than five files (only Metrocard). I am not sure if this affects anybody, though. [ Reply | More ]

From what I understand, my dc will be picked up at 7:20 in our neighborhood to be at NEST by 8:00, in time for breakfast before school starts. The commute home is a tiny bit shorter - bus leaves at 3:25, off the bus at 3:50. They did say that the schedule is subject to change depending on how many kids decide to take the bus from which area. [ Reply | More ]

That's crazy to do to a 4/5 yo. It's not like Nest is even very good. [ Reply | More ]

She takes a 40 bus to camp now and is completely fine with it. But I can see other children not being able to handle it. [ Reply | More ]

Both my kids bused to Anderson from an outer borough. Private bus = $2500 yr. Best money I ever spent. City-issued Metrocard is full fare if you live far enough away and continues through high school. Bus doesn't work for your kid then don't do it. Mine enjoyed it as social time with other neighborhood kids who also went to Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

Where are you? What private bus company is it? Do you have to organize this yourself with other A family? New A parent looking for solution... [ Reply | More ]

Also very curious about the bus to A. I think I heard that currently the only private bus is from Riverdale. [ Reply | More ]

Nah, first time I have posted re NEST. I wouldn't have even considered it because of the distance, we live in the UES, but when DC got a 99 DH bought into the G&T hype and I agreed to tour. It is okay not horrible. We would have considered it if we lived nearby, but we both felt that it was not special enough to put such a young child on a bus for 40 minutes to an hour each way. I felt the same about many private schools I toured. Frankly, I didn't see much difference between Nest and those schools. Oh, yeah there was one difference - about $30,000 worth of difference. [ Reply | More ]

Can I ask how you got this info? Starting K in the fall and haven't heard any word about bus schedules, or what Nest's plan is there. [ Reply | More ]

Dh got it when he registered, plus the probable pickup spot, but they told him everything was subject to change. Does anyone know when bus service actually begins? [ Reply | More ]
