The hospital will not let you leave unless the db is in a carseat. [ Reply | More ]

but isn't it complicated to install with the base and all? Will a NY cab really wait there while you do this? [ Reply | More ]

you don't need to have the base to install the carseat. the base is more of a convenience to keep in your own car. [ Reply | More ]

Just tell them to put on the meter. They get it though and will have no problem with it, new baby and all. My husband walked home with the baby in a carseat in a snap n go ourselves, I took a cab. [ Reply | More ]

Once you open the door, the cab is yours. Driver may not like it but that would be so far down the list of things I give a shit about at that point that I would probably overlook it. [ Reply | More ]

Everyone says this but did anyone actually have a hospital check? I carried both my sons out. Seat was in car. Nobody stopped me and I can't imagine what they would have said if they had tried. What authority does the hospital have? [ Reply | More ]

Hhmmm... I'm not sure. My dd was released from the NICU and they did a weird hang out in the carseat for an hour before we were able to leave. [ Reply | More ]

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I think you ought to take a newborn in a cab (or any car) without a carseat. Just that it seems odd that everyone says the hospital won't let you leave without baby in a car seat. What if you live around the corner and are not driving? What if the car seat is installed? etc. [ Reply | More ]

Cornell checked, not only that you had a car seat but that db was properly buckled in. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ even my friend who lived across the street and was not getting in a vehicle had to bring in the car seat and put her db in it. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder what they would say if your friend said, "No. I have a stroller." Or "db's dad is carrying." Or whatever. The hospital can't stop you. [ Reply | More ]

As I said above, I'm not advocating that you don't. Just pointing out that, 1. I don't think this is as hard and fast a rule as people think; 2. so what? Unless the hospital has somebody trained in car seat installation and is going to come out and make sure it is installed, why get involved at all. And 3. to tell me I need a car seat to walk my kid home... please. I guess if I felt like the hospitals had really perfected L&D and the whole maternity floor experience, then they should think about branching out to traffic safety. But since they seem to screw up their core mission so regularly maybe they should focus on that first. [ Reply | More ]

they have a ton of mandates for baby safety since for too much of the population, that's one of the few reliable contacts with the healthcare system. its the same reason they tell you not to shake your baby when you are checking out. I don't imagine they will stop you from leaving, especially if you say baby is being walked home. but they will ask. [ Reply | More ]

The law is irrelevant. A newborn needs to be in a carseat. [ Reply | More ]

Try KidCar New York. They will come pick you up with the proper infant carseat. They will even teach you how to install you own. [ Reply | More ]

I'm against unnecessary expenditures but if they show you how to install it I think it would be worth it. [ Reply | More ]

cabs have a special exemption under the law -- it is NOT illegal (however unwise) for a child to ride in a taxi without a carseat in NYC. def not recommending it esp for a newborn or any infant [ Reply | More ]

you do not have to have a car seat in a nyc cab. we don't own a car and do not plan on buying a car seat since we normally just use the subway. however, it was suggested to us to borrow an infant car seat just for the trip home from the hospital since we will be taking a cab and not the MTA. maybe with a toddler for a short distance in a cab w/o car seat is okay, but not a newborn.
