let me guess - you used to have have "sort by most recent" checked on the old site. look to the right - is "sort by recency" checked? anytime you suspect something is being resurrected, look through the posts and you'll realize that someone just responded to a very old post. i don't know why people are doing it but they are. [ - ] Nothing is perfect. Did anyone catch the articles recently in the WSJ and The NYTs about the stress levels of kids in highly-regarded public schools in the NYC suburbs? Both sensationalize things a bit, but the stress of the city is talked about here a lot... and finding a strong academic peer group is too... but there are downsides to putting your child into a great school system where they are guaranteed a spot. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

i am not an anti- tv mom at all but i don't think that's necessary for a 4 hour trip with only one child. the mom could read books, do sticker books, color, talk with her child about what they're passing, how a train works - there are so many things you can do for four hours if you're dealing with one child at a time. I prob. made it worse b/c she was supposed to be our last and I haven't stressed about it. Now that I'm 20 pg w/#4 and her clingyness has increased, I'm beginning to worry about what's going to happen when the baby is born. Did anyone do anything before the baby was born that helped a 2.5 y.o. become less clingy? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think it's a school that is very sincere in its efforts, really wants to bring all parents on board, give the kids what they need. But some of the kids' parents aren't as involved as they'd like. The white middle class in this neighborhood has tended to stay away--in my opinion it's because there's a large minority population and they don't want their kids to be one of the few white kids in the class. I think that will change if zoned white people have to attend. It's a great school--with incredible diversity. It just needs some upper middle class white parents to sign on to change its reputation to be one of the top public schools. Just my opinion having lived in this neighborhood for many years--and I am also one of those white parents who didn't send her kid there, but that's because dc got into an excellent G&T. Don't waste money on a smaller one for this one trip. The car seat is a mixed bag... My dd wouldn't go in the seat and then I had no seat (and she wasn't strapped in for turbulance anyway) and then it wouldn't fit on the Australian Quantas planes. When ds was that age, we traveled with our marathon everywhere. We used a little cart, attaching it to the seat with a bungee cord, which made it easier to wheel in the airport. Now, there's a special cart/wheels attachment you can buy that works specifically with the Britax carseats. You can find it online in a number of places. It's a little pricey, but looks like it works well. ds would never sit still in the plane seat, if it weren't for the carseat. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like you are new to the NYC schools. IMHO there are only a few good zoned geneds in D3 that being 87,199 and 9 (in that order) some schools also house G&T programs(which you just have to live in the district to apply for), the most highly sought after G&T in D3 are PS9, PS166 and 163. Anderson is in D3 but is a citywide G&T. If you are moving so dc has a good gened option I would tour the schools before making any decisions. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is a combination of old information, myth, and truth. I would imagine if you have a kid who is hard to keep on task, and you have a lot of after school stuff where homework is not done, and an early bed time -- the homework sometimes could be a pain in the ass. That is not our situation so homework is not a big deal. You need to stay on top of it BUT it is manageable. Counseling out I think is a thing of the past. First of all, the reality is that to "kick" a NYC resident out of a public school is pretty hard. But I think in the past when tests were much more subjective, and or when the school administration had their own agenda, they were more aggressive about this. My impression is that none of my ds's peers have been asked to not return. The school is not perfect but I like it. Now the commute... that really does suck. [ Reply | More ]
