Testing a theory: how many are hanging out here because you are dealing with placement of your first/only child versus ones dealing with subsequent kids? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

both of my children are in pirvate schools. I am one of those reasonable voices who tries to give "real" information about actual experiences of myself and close friends only to have people whos e child was just admitted to K or who are in the process of applying to tell me I'm clueless. Fit your theory? [ Reply | More ]

sample size is still too low for me to confirm or deny my theory, but to be honest you were out of the scope of my inquiry! But thankful for your input into these and other threads [ Reply | More ]

Thank you for your answer. As you know, we are still waiting & waiting for G&T result, so I'm not sure my dd would be in NEST or not. But reading UB made me a bit scared of NEST. However, when I tour the school, I kind of liked it: lots of light, newer facilities, and laid back kids who doesn't look miserable at all! I'm bit concerned about tons of home work and caounseled out aspect. (But may be these could be a UB myth ;-) [ Reply | More ]

I think it is a combination of old information, myth, and truth. I would imagine if you have a kid who is hard to keep on task, and you have a lot of after school stuff where homework is not done, and an early bed time -- the homework sometimes could be a pain in the ass. That is not our situation so homework is not a big deal. You need to stay on top of it BUT it is manageable. Counseling out I think is a thing of the past. First of all, the reality is that to "kick" a NYC resident out of a public school is pretty hard. But I think in the past when tests were much more subjective, and or when the school administration had their own agenda, they were more aggressive about this. My impression is that none of my ds's peers have been asked to not return. The school is not perfect but I like it. Now the commute... that really does suck. [ Reply | More ]
