[ - ] pls no flames...i think there are some guys trying to hurt my dh. He has been outspoken about his job and how corrupt & unhappy he is and he noticed today that this guy followed him to the gym and looked a bit mafioso and was kind of sizing him up. The guy that followed him didnt't have a gym outfit and didn;t work out, kind of just scoped him out. My dh works as a blue collar and is in a union. He has a big mouth which can get him in trouble sometimes. There are more problems with his job & there are guys from unsavory backgrounds who he works with. Should we go to the police? 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

does he think it is management or the union that's trying to intimidate him? If it's management, he should go to his union rep. The police can't do anything about something like that. In the meantime, he should talk to the management of his gym, people who are not members are not allowed in the gym... [ Reply | More ]

Mu son's favorite color is pink and he often dressed up at that age in dresses. Still occasionally does (4.5 now). Not to worry. What will be will be. However, if you come down on him hard or tease him for liking those things, it will be painful for him. He'll get enough 'socialization' from school kids and you should still support him in the things he does like -- whether dolls or dresses or whatever. [ Reply | More ]

No, you don't have enough of a cushion. You or your dh need to find better paying jobs if you want to stay home or you need to find a more satisfying job so you look forward to work. If only one works, you should save 12 mos expenses in savings and have a home equity line of credit (which you can't get once you lose your job) or other comparable cushion (wealthy parents, etc). To have another kid come over just means one more kid to clean after, one more kid who i have to feed, one more kid i have to entertain. My 4 yr old is in pre-school, and the 2 yr old goes to a daycare three mornings a week, so they both get plenty of time playing with other kids. And if my daughter goes to someone else's house, that just means I have an whole afternoon of keeping my son happy without his sister to occupy him.... Am I the only one who feels this way? I don't need/ want to amuse myself with another parent and their children in my off hours. I want to be fully with my children when I'm at home. I think playdates were designed for SAHM to alleviate their boredom. The only time I see playdates as being meaningful is for shy kids that need to get to know their new classmates better. I know that will be a controversial statement, sorry. [ Reply | More ]

They're doing this a day late and a dollar short. There has been no transparency throughout this entire process and this is hardly enough to placate people now. [ Reply | More ]

They're not even purporting to provide transparency, and I don't believe they ever will (again, ample ammunition). Trust me, I'm totally with you on the day late thing. But come on. There is no pleasing some of you. Just try to remember that the DOE serves the entire public school system of this great city. That is TONS of kids, TONS of families & communities. Your/our stake in this is a drop in the bucket. [ Reply | More ]

ITA - they're responsible for 1.1 million kids -- it's the largest school system in the nation -- and the G&Ts are a tiny fraction, many of whom have good gen ed (or even private) options open to them. That said, they have been pretty lame out it! [ Reply | More ]

Yes--the new G&T assignments this year represent less than 1/2 a percent of the students (.02 %) that they cover [ Reply | More ]

So they said we will receive them this week, which means, they really need to mail them before Friday, otherwise they would have said "will be mailed this week" - right? I am really hoping to get before I go away on Friday afternoon!!!!! Even if we don't get first choice - at least I will know already! [ Reply | More ]

What student info could they be verifying (other than sibling status where applicable)? I guess they're verifying that you live in the District that you ranked? [ Reply | More ]

Here's my guess: they ran the computer program and assigned everyone a school. Now they are going through by hand to make sure that siblings were appropriately assigned (and that they were legitimate siblings--different names and addresses will make that harder) and perhaps to even logic test and make sure that non-sibling 97s weren't assigned before 98s and 99s etc. [ Reply | More ]

OR: You are right. The sibling issue was the problem with the preK lottery, and maybe they're using the same company, so they know that the sibling priority is a weak spot. [ Reply | More ]

^^The things I loved: One friend gave me a bunch of trashy magazines with post-its on some pages with her comments. Another friend gave me Oscar Blandi hair powder and a Mason Pearson travel hairbrush - the powder kept my hair decent for nearly my entire stay. [ Reply | More ]

those edible arrangements are great! but i'm not sure i'd want one near me at a hospital, as a patient or a guest. having spent a bunch of time recently with a relative, what would be really handy is a food basket of sealed foods. they can take them to the garden or sitting areas to snack. eating IN a hospital room is really odd given all the stuff going on. maybe she would enjoy some good magazines in her taste be it the New Yorker, US, or Martha?
