[ - ] This is only for mom of G&T kids who scored over 97. People on this Board think that it is terrible to teach our own kids in a competitive enviroment anything at home that is academic. Honestly, how many of you (before age 5)- have done "Zero teaching" ( no letters, no writing, no sounds, only reading bedtime stories) , "Normal amount of teaching" (letters, sounds, numbers, colors, shapes, seasons, up,down), "A little more than normal teaching" (all the above plus sounding out words, putting word families and sight words up on the walls - to play games with, reading beginners books, discussing topics of interest at length, introduced to different workbooks to try out (K level), or "A lot more than normal"( all of the above, plus made available chapter books, Workbooks on logic, workbooks on different subjects(1st grade). Please note %, gender and one of the above. Be honest. 27 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Ok , I have to ask: without teaching her anything, did she go to pre-school? In order to pass G&T 2nd part, you have to at least know letters, numbers, shapes and colors. You are not born with that knowledge. What was her score? What does she know just from pre-school? [ Reply | More ]

We used to be in the "do nothing" category, but at the reccomendation of our PSD we ordered the OLSAT prep kit and that was it, DD was sold. Now we make regular trips to Bank Street Books for workbooks. DD only likes math, patterns and problem solving ones. No reading. She has all her pre-reading skills from watching Super Why and asking questions, but the math is exploding thanks to the workbooks. She asks to do one whenever we are home....at least twice a day. She's completing a 1st grade math book now, and is 4.5 years old (December kid starting K in the fall as the youngest.) I never thought I'd be a "tutor" kind of mom but DD loves it and is the one leading it so I'm going with it. [ Reply | More ]

99 dd, normal amount of teaching. She reads fluently, but it's not something anyone taught her explicitly. She has an incredible vocabulary, memory and knack for recognizing patterns, which I think is what allowed her to pick up reading so easily. Her math ability seems to be strong, but it doesn't come as easily as the reading. She writes, but it's messy to the point of illegible. We're leaving that for her teachers to deal with. Interested in just about everything. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't put activities like doing workbooks, putting words on the walls and explicit reading instruction in the same category as something like discussing topics of interest in depth. We've been going too the house almost every weekend now - except winter or late fall whne we go once a month. To rent an SUV in the city for the weekend is over 200. why do you need an suv for every weekend? We get an SUV for heavy transport weekends and then a mid size for other times. And if yourent for a week or a month at a time, the per-diem is signifcantly less. Insurance and parking alone in the city will cost you $6000 per year. We use Hertz and get frequent user miles so we end up having weekends and weeks free. Enjoy the car if you want, but runt he numbers ....it is cheaper and you never have to clean the car! We own our home and sounds like our pattern of visting is similar to yours. I will there full time for 6 weeks this summer. [ Reply | More ]
