We moved ds at 17months and it took him a few weeks to get used to it. We made the bed as comfortable as poss with a padded mattress topper and we kept the bedtime routine the same and calmly put ds back into bed every time he got out. He did spend a few nights sleeping in his chair in the beginning. [ Reply | More ]

We tried really hard not to react to him at all but to put him back into bed and encourage him to stay there by reading his story to him while he was in the bed. We put a gate on the door to his bedroom and left a few books with him so that if he did get up he could entertain himself until he decided to go back to bed. [ Reply | More ]

18 months. We are flying to Europe and need to buy a car seat and are sooo clueless. Thinking of the Graco Comfort Sport on the theory that it's light, and I gather it's not complicated to install using a car's seat belts (and hopefully OK on a plane too). [ Reply | More ]

if you're using car seat on the plane, you can also just buy the backpack straps rather than a whole bag (we check the seat). That way you can just put the seat on your back without the whole in and out of bag process. [ Reply | More ]

In terms of scale the needed to send out 23,000 pre-school letters and god knows how many middle school letters. This should be a piece of cake... 10 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

But it's the DOE, see? First they had to find consultants to go get the mail (I know for a fact they outsourced it). Then they had to send the sheets to the consultants they hired to do the data entry (I also know they outsourced this). Then they had to deal with lost forms. Oh, and return receipts, because you know how difficult it is to sign something and stick it back in the mail. Then they had to screw up the Pre-K process. Now that all of that is behind them maybe they can place the K kids in G&T. But I'm sure a few other consultants will have to be called in first. [ Reply | More ]

I have decided to view the delay in a positive light. In other words, they know the heat is on b/c of high profile f*ckups with Middle School & PreK, so they are double checking the G&T process and making sure their "i"s are dotted and "t"s are crossed before notifying. [ Reply | More ]

the can dot all the i's they want and cross all the t's but if we don't get the placements we want we will still curse their names. I hope they plan to be totally transparent in the end about how many applications they got and how they broke out by score, because if we find 99s and 98s in their 4th or 5th place schools something is likely fishy... OR: Most of us 99s are going to be disappointed, since most appear to have ranked Anderson and there will only be about 50 seats for Anderson. So I fully expect to be disappointed. On the other hand, we feel pretty good about our district choice, and at least we know a few other kids who might be attending the district program, so that's a good thing. Plus, it's closer to home. [ - ] Is there a standard maximum amount one should spend on a kid's bday gift (not your kid but your kid's friend from school, for example)? I always though $20 is a generous amount but when I saw what kind of gifts my DS got for his birthday from his school friends last week, I can only say Wow! One gave him gifts worth $100 total. I think of it the other way. I try to spend at least $20. If I see the perfect gift and it is more I buy it. If I see the perfect gift and it is less, I will add another little thing (coloring book, hair barette or what ever) to make up the difference [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. Maybe for the reason poster mentioned. We get such nice gifts that I'd feel bad knowing that I hadn't spent at least $20. Plus it is my mental budget and maybe a little game for me to hit that number. The little nothing part becomes part of a larger theme, etc. Like if I got some thing with Blues Clues in it the little nothing part would be Blues Clues stickers. I enjoy shopping for gifts a little too much. It is like shopping with a challenge or purpose! [ Reply | More ]

In preschool where DS is invited to all the birthday parties, I keep it at $20 max for all but his closest friends and then maybe I go to $30. Once DS gets older and he's only going to those closest friends, I could see spending more if it was something that I thought would be a great gift for that kid. [ Reply | More ]
