Is there a standard maximum amount one should spend on a kid's bday gift (not your kid but your kid's friend from school, for example)? I always though $20 is a generous amount but when I saw what kind of gifts my DS got for his birthday from his school friends last week, I can only say Wow! One gave him gifts worth $100 total. Others ranged from $20-$50. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'd like to think that with all the kids' bdays, $20.- should be sufficient. My sister has more money and tends to give more expensive gifts, but I don't want to get caught up in keeping up with the Jones'! [ Reply | More ]

I think of it the other way. I try to spend at least $20. If I see the perfect gift and it is more I buy it. If I see the perfect gift and it is less, I will add another little thing (coloring book, hair barette or what ever) to make up the difference [ Reply | More ]

Why do you have the urge to always get it up to at least $20? If you found the perfect gift that is less than that why the need to add something more or less bogus to it just to get the total price up? [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. Maybe for the reason poster mentioned. We get such nice gifts that I'd feel bad knowing that I hadn't spent at least $20. Plus it is my mental budget and maybe a little game for me to hit that number. The little nothing part becomes part of a larger theme, etc. Like if I got some thing with Blues Clues in it the little nothing part would be Blues Clues stickers. I enjoy shopping for gifts a little too much. It is like shopping with a challenge or purpose! [ Reply | More ]

In preschool where DS is invited to all the birthday parties, I keep it at $20 max for all but his closest friends and then maybe I go to $30. Once DS gets older and he's only going to those closest friends, I could see spending more if it was something that I thought would be a great gift for that kid. [ Reply | More ]

I try to spend around $15 - $20. If it is a really good friend and dd wants to get something that is a little more money, I might go up to $25 - $30. [ Reply | More ]

$20 is pretty much my maximum. Once in a while I'll go a little over if it's for something I know the dc will truly love. But dc goes to so many parties, we really can't spend more than that per gift, and usually we spend less. [ Reply | More ]

I think that 18 to 30 is good. Anything else is excessive. [ Reply | More ]
