[ - ] 18mo has shown a sudden independent streak, and only wants to feed herself. Other than only feeding her non-messy finger foods, any advice on how to allow her to do this and keep the kitchen, her clothes and her body from looking like they've been in a food fight? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Feed her in a diaper. At this age, she should be feeding herself 100% of the time. [ Reply | More ]

I think you have to allow her to be messy for a while. Serve very small portions, like a spoonful or two in a bowl at a time. In the long run, it will benefit you. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] my housekeeper comes once a week. Dh thinks that since we've rented a house 2 hrs away this summer and he is able to work there all but two days a week, that I should have housekeeper come every other week and pay her only when she comes. Is this okay? What do those of you who go to the Hamptons all summer do? 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

my housekeeper/nanny works half of the week at our summer home (and stays over night) instead of a full week in NYC. It is also a little under 2 hours by train to our beach hosue, so at times, she will clean there for the day instead for working in NYC, as needed. We also always offer our house to her and her family when we aren't there on weekends, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it "irregular" or unexpected, but it does decrease her income (a moral consideration I think that good employers and those that can afford to do so take into consideration). Just let her know well in advance, if you can not afford to pay her. But I think that would be a hard case to make, if youcan afford to reant ahome for the summer. [ Reply | More ]

It sucks for your cleaning lady. If I were her I'd be looking for someone who could guarantee me full time work. Can you find someone who can use her on your off weeks? Can she do other things for you? Organize closets, bigger projects? If you can afford a full time summer rental I think you can probably find a way to make this work financially for your cleaning lady. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I agree...JOhn Jay is agood option, especially earlier in the day.....you can do some research on the rules, but I htink they include no "logo" shirts, clear plastic bag for small items in the pool area and bring your own lock for the locker. There are street vendors for a dog or ice crema near JJ and bagels and pizza one or two blocks away. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I've agreed with my nanny to give her cab fare after 9:30 on weekends, but both times she's worked with us, she's gotten her husband to pick her up and wants me to pay her cash. I feel it's a bit unfair...the point of giving her the fare is that it's theoretically unsafe for her to take a cab home at that time of night, no? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Theoretically yes but for good will I'd give her the money as agreed. I used to give my sitter cab fare and she caught the bus which was her choice. [ Reply | More ]

I just checked this--if you use an agency for a sitter, you have to give a set amount in cabfare. This might or might not cover sitter's cabfare, but they could opt to walk or use public transport. I'd view it as a bonus for a late night or for sitting on a weekend. I agree though that it feels a little unfair as it's not being used as intended. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. When I am on a business trip I always put the per diem amount for daily expenses on the expense report. Most of the time I don't use up the entire amount, though, and pocket the change. [ Reply | More ]

I have been a nanny and have been offered cab fare on late nights, which I really appreciated. I have also opted to take the bus and save the money. This seemed like the less pleasant, but more thrifty option. [ Reply | More ]

I always give my babysitters cabfare home. I believe it is my obligation to provide them a means to get home safely. If they choose to otherwise, that is their prerogative. [ Reply | More ]
