I've agreed with my nanny to give her cab fare after 9:30 on weekends, but both times she's worked with us, she's gotten her husband to pick her up and wants me to pay her cash. I feel it's a bit unfair...the point of giving her the fare is that it's theoretically unsafe for her to take a cab home at that time of night, no? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Theoretically yes but for good will I'd give her the money as agreed. I used to give my sitter cab fare and she caught the bus which was her choice. [ Reply | More ]

i'd pay her. it is unsafe that is why her husband is picking her up. might be hard to decide on the amount. [ Reply | More ]

I just checked this--if you use an agency for a sitter, you have to give a set amount in cabfare. This might or might not cover sitter's cabfare, but they could opt to walk or use public transport. I'd view it as a bonus for a late night or for sitting on a weekend. I agree though that it feels a little unfair as it's not being used as intended. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. When I am on a business trip I always put the per diem amount for daily expenses on the expense report. Most of the time I don't use up the entire amount, though, and pocket the change. [ Reply | More ]

I have been a nanny and have been offered cab fare on late nights, which I really appreciated. I have also opted to take the bus and save the money. This seemed like the less pleasant, but more thrifty option. [ Reply | More ]

The agreement is you pay for her transport home if she works late. Once she's out the door it's none of your business how she gets home. [ Reply | More ]

I always give my babysitters cabfare home. I believe it is my obligation to provide them a means to get home safely. If they choose to otherwise, that is their prerogative. [ Reply | More ]
