I may be in the minority here, but I really hate playdates. I have two kids, ages 4 and 2, and they play together so well and are so good about keeping eachother busy. To have another kid come over just means one more kid to clean after, one more kid who i have to feed, one more kid i have to entertain. My 4 yr old is in pre-school, and the 2 yr old goes to a daycare three mornings a week, so they both get plenty of time playing with other kids. And if my daughter goes to someone else's house, that just means I have an whole afternoon of keeping my son happy without his sister to occupy him.... Am I the only one who feels this way? I know most mom's really like playdates. What's wrong with me? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

ITA... I am with you. Can't explain why. I just think this way, too! [ Reply | More ]

My biggest issue with them is that I either have to entertain another mom or go to someone else's house. Fun when I like the mom, awkward otherwise. Nobody seems to do drop-offs where I live yet. [ Reply | More ]

I think you are lucky that your dcs play well together. My dcs are 3 years apart, and while they get on fine, dc#1 always wants a playdate with "someone her own age". And she is much easier to deal with if she has a playdate, honestly. The cleaning up isn't any worse after a playdate than otherwise at my house. [ Reply | More ]

Nursery school teacher here: I know what you mean...but there is a social-side to it (beyond the actual playdate -- in terms of the class). [ Reply | More ]

this may be fine for your 2yo, but it totally sucks for your 4yo, who needs to have age-appropriate friends and opportunities to play with them [ Reply | More ]

^^ and i don't just mean in the institutional/formal setting of a day care -- i mean one-on-one free play with a friend [ Reply | More ]

np: you know...the kid is 4yo, it is perfectly normal for many kids this age to only interact with family members. I think modern society can get really carried away with socializing every kid in the same exact manner. [ Reply | More ]

Agree, but by five, it's important I think. Still, sympathize with OP -- playdates can be way annoying. [ Reply | More ]

no, she's in pre-school from 9 - 2 five days a week. she gets LOTS of playing with her friends. i think it's ok for her to spend teh afternoons at home with her brother. perhaps when they're older it won't be that way any longer. but they probably won't love sharing a room for that much longer either..... it also sucks that her home time is spent entertaining your 2yo for you so you don't have to [ Reply | More ]

i dislike playdates too, but perhaps for different reason. I am WOHM and I feel that the time that I'm home is precious. I don't need/ want to amuse myself with another parent and their children in my off hours. I want to be fully with my children when I'm at home. I think playdates were designed for SAHM to alleviate their boredom. The only time I see playdates as being meaningful is for shy kids that need to get to know their new classmates better. I know that will be a controversial statement, sorry. [ Reply | More ]
