[ - ] Question: if a baby up to 2 months old can't be 'spoiled' by picking up and holding a lot, what happens after 2 months? it's not as if they are aware of the expiration date. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] My 10yr old dd asked me what gay means. I told her it means that when a girl falls in love, she'll love a girl, and when a boy falls in love, he'll love another boy. the other night we are at a resturant and our male waiter is clearly gay. (wearing makeup and such) and so my dd then says "so if he's gay, does that mean he wants to be a girl?" I said I didn't think so, but I wasn't sure. I told her that I think he's just comfortable with himself, which is great, but that I didn't think being gay meant he wants to be a girl. But I am not sure if I explained it correctly to her. Any gay parents/people want to help me out? it's super important to me that she accepts and is comfortable with all people so I want to be sure I am explaining it correctly. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think you handled it as honest as you could. Being gay doesn't mean they want to be that sex. My aunt is a very butchy woman (always been) and she's a lesbian but never wanted to be a man. You did fine [ Reply | More ]

If it were me, I would have also said that as much as I love our friend who is gay, the lifestyle itself is wrong. Just as swearing is wrong and lying is wrong. I don't base my parenting style on what is politically correct, but spiritually right. [ Reply | More ]

that's fine that you have that opinion, but here's how I see it: while I hope that none of my kids are gay, if they are, I want them to know that my love for them comes before my religion. I want my kids to know that my love is unconditional because being a parent isn't about your kids doing what you decide is "spiritually right" [ Reply | More ]

You take 3rd grade test, that will give you some indication of how your child tests. IF you find a problem then (or before if teacher brings it to your attention), then deal. But to make issue of it the summer before your child even enters K makes it appear that you are a little helicoptery and a bit looney. Wait for problems to fix, don't create them [ Reply | More ]

NP: depending on what zone your school is in, look at how they teach math. There's NOTHING you need to do now, but do keep an eye on math. Some public districts are better than others about that, and even with top test scores, it may be hard to get top public middle without some math supplementation at home or elsewhere. That said, do NOTHING now, just try to make the entry to K pleasant for your DS or DD so he or she will love the whole idea of school! [ Reply | More ]

We wanted a school that focused on process over product, that taught "how to think" more than teaching a specific body of knowledge. I am here. Thought I would let the G&T chatter die down before I asked my uniform questions- how many shirts and pants should I order for a boy. I was thinking 6 shirts and 3 pairs of pants. Anyone with exp care to comment? Thanks. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Are Maplewood and South Orange basically the same town or is there an advantage to one over the other? And, how are real estate prices doing over there? TIA. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

not the same but very close to one another. I think maplewood is more 'established' so property taxes are higher. Both have train stations to get you to the city, which is good. the whole area and neighboring towns are great (west caldwell, verona, west orange, etc). [ Reply | More ]

I'm shopping for a house now in Millburn and prices are finally starting to come down. Probably the same in Maplewood/SO. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone with a high-scoring DC going to Gen Ed because you did not get one of your first choices? Are you worried that your child will be bored in a regular classroom or that the teachers won't be know how to keep them interested? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

we did get our first choice but are deciding on gen ed anyway. No, I'm not worried about "bored" because "bored" is not a bad thing! [ Reply | More ]

BTDT mom w/ kids in both G&T and great gen ed: Your kid will probably be fine, but it depends on your dc's temperament, your own anxiety level about this, and your teacher. BTW, being in G&T does not guarantee that your high-scoring dc will not be bored either, but I do not think occasional boredom is necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it leads a dc to taking more initiative and being more creative, IMHO. Never hurt my dcs. [ Reply | More ]
