I think it all depends on the teacher you get. This holds true for every public, private, preschool in the universe. We were at IPS 35th street. Some years my kids got amazing off the charts teachers, some years were a fright sight. This holds true with my kids elem school. Luck of the draw. If it is convenient for you then I would go with IPS. OK, that is what I thought. I would have been the perfect candidate for this as a child. I was one of the brightes in the class and always had my work finished first. I also enjoyed mentoring and taking care of other children. It would have been a terrific thing. My ds on the other hand, while bright - does not have the personality to benefit from a CTT class. He tends to behave "to the lowest common denominator". Meaning, if a group of children start yelling and fighting - he's going to be right there in the mix fighting for what he beleives instead of walking away from the trouble. If a group of children giggle and interrupt the teacher, he will too. If the group is well behaved - he is too. So, I would not put him in a CTT class for that reason and that reason alone. I like learning from others, I like being exposed to all sorts of abilities and strengths, I like the idea of CTT for the special ed children and the special children who can help them. So, it all boils down to what you think is best for YOUR son. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

my son has been in CTT for K & 1st grade and it's not a place for behaviorally difficult children; In fact - I've seen just as many - if not more behavior issues in other classes; I think it's unfair to assume that the kids in CTT are more behaviorally challenged and that your child would behave to a low denominator because he was placed there. BTDT mom: Prior to dc being in CTT class this year, I was very in favor of this. After this year, I would strongly advise against it. You may be lucky and have a wonderful experience, or you may be like us, and have a really crappy year. It depends on the student mix. This year, the class had several kids who were big behavioral problems (e.g. had to call security officer to the class several times, kids got suspended for various infractions). The teachers did what they could be were overwhelmed by these few kids. In addition, our dc is reading and doing math way above grade level, and the teachers did what they could to enrich her, but it was still less than she would have gotten in a regular class. I think CTT is great and wonderful for special ed kids, but not such a great experience for gen ed, especially if your kid is on the brighter side. [ Reply | More ]

I need to put my 18 mo in daycare in the fall, I think (don't think we can swing nanny) but I feel like she's going to be a total mess and that we're going to screw her up. #1 did parttime daycare but never had a second of separation anxiety in her whole life, and was also very verbal and communicated well at a young age (no frustration). She really loved it and we keep her there until she was 2.5 (when her little sister was born) then switched to nanny/preschool. they adjust. fwiw - we had situation similar to poster above and switched to preschool/nanny when dc 2 came along. i can tell know how my first really benefited from starting daycare around 18 months - yes, there were issues and we had to switch him at one point - but it was all transparent to him. we are new nest parents and get this one - we had just moved blocks away from our zoned school two months ago and now will make the commute. I think the difference is that it is NOT a neighborhood school so a lot of people are in the same boat - the way I am rationalizing it is that it is not an easy commute for most people so everyone has to make an extra effort but if you love the school it will be worth it. Drive to school every day and you'll have friends coming out of the woodwork. (I'm kidding but drive and reach out to the family of one or two kids in the area and you'll be the bomb!) [ Reply | More ]

that's kind of what i am hoping - maybe can carpool and meet some other people - i would seriously let someone else drive my car if they could pick up. I have to LOL as we almost sold our car and now I can't believe i may be driving my kid to school (HATE TO DRIVE) but this will beat a 45 minute commute. [ Reply | More ]

With an attitude like yours, you'll do fine. I have met some really nice folks at NEST. Good luck. See you in Sept. (I'll be the parent with the cutest first grader!) [ Reply | More ]

Most of the rest of the families are in a similar boat. I guess community comes from drop off, pick up, some parties, and events at the school. I would not move from a place I loved to be closer to NEST. I am commuting from Brooklyn. [ Reply | More ]

My DH and I also work full-time and manage to be involved. We have both done the parent reading, attended PTA meetings etc. Since our child is on a bus though, we are not there at drop-off or pick-up and while I think that you can end up knowing lots of folks just by showing up at the scheduled events and volunteering for parent reading here or there, I think there is a different level of community among the parents who either are SAHMs or have flexible schedules. Moving closer won't help with this. [ Reply | More ]

It's done by Wingspan. You can google it. THey have the schedule that they offered NEST students last year, and it looked AMAZING. And very affordable, too. But NEST admin did warn me that it won't necessarily be renewed for the year, esp. with the school going to 1200 students for the fall - they may not have enough room onsite so they might have to contract out with another org who will transport the kids offsite [ Reply | More ]

Ditto here - so excited, and I've only met really nice parents from there. The commute is going to be a drag for pretty much everyone I think. I'm hoping there will be an element of "bonding through adversity" to that aspect of it. [ Reply | More ]

we plan on trying the commute for A whilebwith the goal of movingbafter wesuss out the situation and plant some roots in the new community. It's potentially 13 years and I think as closeas can be is best. But you don't needto decidejust yet. And congratulations. This whole schools thing, public private has been hellish. I'm glad it's over [ Reply | More ]

New principal came in last year. It divided the entire school community parents and teachers. The staff is so unhappy. It truly is so sad. It was a great school with such potential. [ Reply | More ]

The parents should demand that the principal meets the teacher/students needs. Be proactive it sound like the school still has a chance if the parents are willing to get involved enough [ Reply | More ]

that's just it - most of us have backed off - it's never ending. It was so bad - parents who were friends no longer talking and the staff is the same way. I can't imagine who thinks this is a good place to be. The scores for testing are still good, but that's because that's all they do now in the beginning of the year - TEST PREP. [ Reply | More ]

What has changed with the school (besides test prep)? There can be some growing pains with a new principal because most people are resistant to change, good or bad. It's hard to be rational and analyze whether the changes are for the good or not. And the rumors, backtalk etc. BTDT. It's exhausting. But eventually people settle down and hopefully there's a net gain all around. [ Reply | More ]

The SLT fills out a review form. The parents are also asked to fill out that survey that comes in the green envelope. Perhaps you all can use that to draw attention to your unhappiness. [ Reply | More ]
