It totally depends on your son. Is your son special ed, or general population in CTT? [ Reply | More ]

Really? I'd hope it was because the Gen Ed teacher has fewer students to work with so he will get more attention. [ Reply | More ]

That isn't the way the CTT class works. Both teachers help all the students. [ Reply | More ]

no, according to the teachers, they pick ten high performing gen ed students, almost like honors students, to be in this class. it worries me that he might be picked because they can afford to overlook him. [ Reply | More ]

Talk to parents who have kids in there currently. That's the best gauge, IMO. [ Reply | More ]

good advice. OP, stop by the class in the next few days and ask some moms if you can bend their ear for a few minutes. Somehow, delicately make sure you are talking to a general ed mom [ Reply | More ]

What school (if not comfortable telling, OK). And does your school have a policy that every child should experience a CTT class? I know of at least one that does, so if that is the case, do it for first. [ Reply | More ]

OK, that is what I thought. I would have been the perfect candidate for this as a child. I was one of the brightes in the class and always had my work finished first. I also enjoyed mentoring and taking care of other children. It would have been a terrific thing. My ds on the other hand, while bright - does not have the personality to benefit from a CTT class. He tends to behave "to the lowest common denominator". Meaning, if a group of children start yelling and fighting - he's going to be right there in the mix fighting for what he beleives instead of walking away from the trouble. If a group of children giggle and interrupt the teacher, he will too. If the group is well behaved - he is too. So, I would not put him in a CTT class for that reason and that reason alone. I like learning from others, I like being exposed to all sorts of abilities and strengths, I like the idea of CTT for the special ed children and the special children who can help them. So, it all boils down to what you think is best for YOUR son. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

my son has been in CTT for K & 1st grade and it's not a place for behaviorally difficult children; In fact - I've seen just as many - if not more behavior issues in other classes; I think it's unfair to assume that the kids in CTT are more behaviorally challenged and that your child would behave to a low denominator because he was placed there. I did not assume anything. I shared my thoughts on CTT. I'm sorry if it offended you. It was not meant to. It was meant to help OP [ Reply | More ]

BTDT mom: Prior to dc being in CTT class this year, I was very in favor of this. After this year, I would strongly advise against it. You may be lucky and have a wonderful experience, or you may be like us, and have a really crappy year. It depends on the student mix. This year, the class had several kids who were big behavioral problems (e.g. had to call security officer to the class several times, kids got suspended for various infractions). The teachers did what they could be were overwhelmed by these few kids. In addition, our dc is reading and doing math way above grade level, and the teachers did what they could to enrich her, but it was still less than she would have gotten in a regular class. I think CTT is great and wonderful for special ed kids, but not such a great experience for gen ed, especially if your kid is on the brighter side. [ Reply | More ]

It can be a great experience due to the teacher:student ratio. It depends on the teachers, and the mix of kids. [ Reply | More ]

in a regular CTT classroom - the kids should be learning at least on grade level if not above; They may just need a little extra attention to focus [ Reply | More ]

former CTT K teacher - gen ed - basically your son was chosen because he's a smart, well-behaved child - DO NOT agree to it if it the first year of the program - the teachers will spend half the year learning how to work together - it can be a real disaster! if it were a proven program, with experienced teachers, then it can be wonderful. My experience at 107 is that the great students don't get a lot of attention. Not sure how this would pan out with inclusion. [ Reply | More ]
