DD is starting Kindergarten at our zoned school. We plan to stay in the city permananetly so I'm already thinking ahead to middle school/high school. What should I be doing now to enrich him and eventually help his test scores down the line? We are open to public or private for upperschool. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

the good news and bad news is that it is so so different as they get older - so much depends on how they are as students and people - it is competitive but no where near as random as k admissions [ Reply | More ]

I think its kind of weird that you are going into this assuming that your dc will need enrichment??? [ Reply | More ]

And you are assuming that he won't be able to get them by learning in school? Is he slow? Why make an issue out of this the summer before K? You take 3rd grade test, that will give you some indication of how your child tests. IF you find a problem then (or before if teacher brings it to your attention), then deal. But to make issue of it the summer before your child even enters K makes it appear that you are a little helicoptery and a bit looney. Wait for problems to fix, don't create them [ Reply | More ]

NP: depending on what zone your school is in, look at how they teach math. There's NOTHING you need to do now, but do keep an eye on math. Some public districts are better than others about that, and even with top test scores, it may be hard to get top public middle without some math supplementation at home or elsewhere. That said, do NOTHING now, just try to make the entry to K pleasant for your DS or DD so he or she will love the whole idea of school! [ Reply | More ]
