For those of you finishing K - how did you like it? Were you happy with the choice going in and how did it match expectations? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

At first it was hard because school doesn't allow parents in the classroom (except for special days) but after seeing the growth dc has made this year I am very happy. [ Reply | More ]

Music once a week, add chorus and band options for older kids. Art once a week, science twice a week (w/special science teacher), dance once a week, and PE once a week. Daily recess, plus extra recess in nice weather (at least in K). All the K classes had 22-23 DC per class w/an ass't. [ Reply | More ]

Hi we are c onsidering. Can you tell me whether they pay attention to specific childres' particular situations. Out son is already reading and dooing math at 2nd grade level, even tho 99.9 s/b and 98 olsat, did not get into g & t of choice and have no desire to go to chinatown. Do you think ds will do well there? [ Reply | More ]

I do. Remember, there are lots of families who work at Rockefeller, Sloan Kettering, etc. who are highly educated w/bright children. I would give it a chance. I know a couple of people who's DC applied to G&T for 1st and both got placed in Chinatown, too. One's taking it, and one isn't. Is your DS a summer or fall birthday? If so, I'd send to 183 and apply to a few privates, just in case. You can try for G&T next year, but it seems like there are very few 1st grade spots (if any) in the desirable programs in D2. GL! Are you going to try for private MS? I'm concerned about test prep in older grades, too. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like us, except in D2. Did you try to apply out in off year to private. We're thinking about looking for 3rd or 4th grade. DC going into 1st and happy so far, but have heard complaints from 3rd grade parents. [ Reply | More ]

it's very very difficult in off grade. Some schools open spots in 6th (especially the 3 Riverdale schools). To answer your question, no we didn't try to switch [ Reply | More ]

LOVE it. It was our FC, although we had some reservations. It exceeded expectations. We wanted a school that focused on process over product, that taught "how to think" more than teaching a specific body of knowledge. After only one year, I am astounded at how my child has evolved in her thinking. Only downside is that kids come from all over and we don't live in the neighborhood, so playdates, after school activities etc. take some planning. [ Reply | More ]
