Maybe she thinks people will harass you. I am actually curious--do you still get to keep that 99 score for next year as they promised people without K district programs. Or since you tried for citywide this year will your child have to retest? [ Reply | More ]

Well and knowing the DOE you never know what other changes they will make next year...which is why I don't plan to harass you--even though we wanted and didn't get NEST. We live pretty far North in Manhattan and the commute was going to be dreadful for us too and I might have ultimately made the same decision you made. I was lucky enough to have a good district option as third choice and got that so I was spared the conflict. [ Reply | More ]

No-we had Nest ranked second and our district program 3rd and my husband had actually switched his preference between the two (because he was going to be the one stuck with the crazy pickup schedule--our other child is on the Upper East Side for school) so we were really okay either way. I would have been slightly happier to get Nest, but our current situation is a million times easier logistically. [ Reply | More ]

Just so sick of judgmental women telling other women how to feed their babies. Especially on this board full of high-achieving, someone anxious women (myself included), we don't need to be mean to one another about what is essentially a private matter. He still occasionally wakes at around 4:30am and I just need to pat him and give him a paci - not a feeding - and he goes right back out (this happens maybe once every week or two - for the most part, he is down for the night). So she is getting 24oz during the day and then another 6oz around 10? Maybe up her day bottles to 8oz (so you don't worry about her getting enough form.) and then totally let her go at night! try it over a weekend if you are worried about waking at 2,3,4am. Our dd was done with her 1 night feed by 5mo and it seems like your dd might be ready. If she wakes up, let her cry/fuss for 5min, go in pat her back, leave, wait 10min, if still crying, go in pat back, leave, wait 15 min., if still crying go in, etc. with 20, 25, 30min Worked for us, only had to go to the 15min. mark. 10-12hrs of overnight sleep ever since! Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

(My DH lived in NYC for 7 years, pre-me & kids; I haven't lived there, but have visited many times.) Any input on family-friendly Brooklyn neighborhoods or areas? I particularly would like somewhere pedestrian-friendly, with some playgrounds, not dangerous as a general rule. I'm not against "up & coming" as long as it's safe and has at least a few cafes, stores, and/or playgrounds. Any other suggestions are appreciated, espec. public schools you particularly recommend or suggest avoiding -- my 6 year old will be entering 1st grade. I live in Kensington - It is walking distance to Prospect Park, but about a mile. There is everything you need nearby - nothing trendy, but only a short ride via car or F train to Park Slope and a short walk to nice restarants in Ditmas Park. Very multi-culti - lots of Banglashei, Hasidic, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and Hispanic residents. Easy commute to city. Schools are OK, not great, not awful. We are pretty ok thru grade school, I am not sure about the middle schools or HS around here yet (my DB is only 8 months old.) As Winsor Terr and Park Slope get too pricey, Kensington is getting more popular and we are bound to get some better shops soon! Worth looking into. GL with your move! [ Reply | More ]

There are several 166 99 3rd choice moms, but it is "disappointed mom" you need to find. I think the rest are all just fine with it now. (they know that their kids are just as smart as the Anderson ones but just drew lower lottery numbers.--It had nothing to do with deeming other kids "smarter" or "better [ Reply | More ]

No I'm not disappointed mom and I think getting the 3rd choice felt worse. I HATE the fact that the DOE changed the rules in the middle of the game with this random lottery. I know with my DD's very high 99 and fall birthday that if the DOE used the raw scores, we would have gotten our 1st or 2nd choice. Plus, at least w/ Hunter we knew the process going in, it didn't constantly change midstream. [ Reply | More ]

OSEPO office stated to the press priority in placement would be based on scores and preferences. Last year the DOE gave raw scores and placed kids with the highest score first. After scores went out this year, this board was buzzing about high, mid, and low 99's. Then a week later or so later the DOE decided it would be a random lottery by % and never publicly announced it. This year the kids with the highest scores became just another 99 in a luck of the draw pool. [ Reply | More ]

Right, but last year the citywides had onsites so that neutralized the score effect for them. In fact I think Anderson saw scores ranging from 97-99 and selected from all of them. It has never been straight top scores for citywide (district was different) [ Reply | More ]

Back in the day lots of the nuns from the order taught there, and the head of school and head of order were the same person, so whether or not it was technically "parochial" there was tight integration. Nowadays, the place is a nun-free. It was never Catholic though, always Episcopalian, and the liberal wing of the Episcopal church at that. [ Reply | More ]

Well, back in the day we had chapel every day, long chapel (like mass) every week, and Religious Knowledge as one of the courses we took every year. We did a Christmas pageant every year at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. And, there were a bunch of Jewish kids there (including me)- the nuns were always very respectful of the fact we weren't Christian. [ Reply | More ]
