Is anyone here a lifelong NYer who went to public schools back in the day? If so, where and when? (I went to pvt school until 8th grade and then Science.) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I went to the public schools in Staten Island in the late 70s, early 80s (talk about big classes -- I remember about 36 kids in a class), then a Catholic high school, then a northeast boarding school. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks. Not sure why I asked, exactly. Just all the nuttiness about public schools and of course my mother doesn't remember it being as bad. (Then again, she sent me to private school until we were too broke to pay). [ Reply | More ]

OP: I wonder...it was different back then (I graduated in '85). There were fewer good schools, at least in Manhattan where I lived. Or so my mother tells me. [ Reply | More ]

Yes - Episcopalian (is parochial not the correct term?), and the teachers were mostly nuns. [ Reply | More ]

Parochial is not the right word--it implies a school run by a religious order. SHSH is an independent Episcopal school--the school runs itself, although it belongs to an affiliation of Episcopal schools. [ Reply | More ]

In my day, it was run by nuns from a convent - the Reverend Mother Ruth was the head of school. [ Reply | More ]

she was the founder of the school--they were Episcopal nuns--the head of the board of trustees has to be an Episcopal priest or bishop [ Reply | More ]

Back in the day lots of the nuns from the order taught there, and the head of school and head of order were the same person, so whether or not it was technically "parochial" there was tight integration. Nowadays, the place is a nun-free. It was never Catholic though, always Episcopalian, and the liberal wing of the Episcopal church at that. [ Reply | More ]

Well, back in the day we had chapel every day, long chapel (like mass) every week, and Religious Knowledge as one of the courses we took every year. We did a Christmas pageant every year at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. And, there were a bunch of Jewish kids there (including me)- the nuns were always very respectful of the fact we weren't Christian. [ Reply | More ]

All of that is still true except the nuns, and the chapel I believe has been moved to St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia. Long chapel doesn't begin until middle school some time. [ Reply | More ]

I went for a day or two - my grandpa was a principal on the UES - not PS6. There are a lot more "good" public elementaries now than in the 70s, the city was always always expensive. And come to think of it, when I was in college and grad school (ivies) I actually never met anyone from a public NYC HS that was not from a magnet HS (Brooklyn Tech, one in Queens, Bronx Science, Hunter, Stuy). I went to PS 9, then moved to cobble hill and went to PS 29. Went to I.S.293 in cobble Hill. Then didn't get into any specialized high schools (my brother went to Tech) and ended up going to John Dewey. My neigborhood H.S. was John Jay and as a white person I would have ended up getting killed. [ Reply | More ]
