Depends on how you look at it. As a society these are the problems at a macro level. The unemployment is high but mainly for a certain demographic and as a result there is civil unrest. Especially as the gov't does not seem to do anything to help or address the underlying issues to help the people in these situations. When you look at people who are likely in your demographic - they have a cushy life - usually a nice job (with more security), lots of vacation. With this job security comes less flexibility. I agree there is not much incentive to create your own business etc. We also pay tons of taxes which then subsidize benefits to people who earn less...but I really don't mind. I actually feel privledged b/c I was born into a middle/upper class white family, got a good education and now a good job. Not everyone had the same start that I did and as a result they have to work harder. I don't mind paying for everyone's health care etc. The result? a society with more middle class, less focus on extremes of haves and have nots. bit of a ramble I know [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.30.08, 01:47 PM Flag

so basically what you are saying is that neither system is dealing very well with the demographic (which I think is similar in both societies). That's fair. I do think, however, with human nature being what it is, that giving someone the ability and opportunity to help themselves and create something of their own (small business etc) is better. I'm all for leveling the playing field. And if I look around, most of the people in my demographic have pretty cushy jobs too. We do have more responsibility and less beaurocracy (except for my DH who is a gov't employee god help him!) Interesting discussion. I have never lived in France, but would love to. What made you move? [ Reply | More ]

moved got an opportunity at work and I am married to a frenchman. Don't think that you cannot create your own business here - the french gov't actually gives you incentive to do so (for one year) However I do think the rules and paperwork (especially if you want to hire employees) are more burdensome than US. It is also more that the mindset of people is less entrepreneurial (did I spell that right?) which I think is linked to their education system [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.30.08, 01:57 PM Flag

possibly is related to the educational system and probably to some extent to the socialist attitudes that the gov't will take care of it. I think that;s the part that bugs me. [ - ] We just hired a new nanny. She had been with the previous family for over 10 years, so there are things we are not offering her that she had attained through time there. One being vacation. He offered her three weeks paid vacation, plus unlimited sick days (within reason) and nine federal holidays. Do you think that is fair? 30 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I think two weeks, plus federal holidays (whichever you have off) at about 5 paid sick days are fair. [ Reply | More ]

Ours has been with us 6.5 years and has always had one week whenever she wants and one week when we're on vacation - minimum. We always take 2 weeks in the summer, often 8 - 9 days at Xmas, so right there she's at 3.5 or 4... Plus she's off whenever either of us is. We've never thought about increasing the vaca days -- she gets as much or more than we do. [ Reply | More ]

Not really. If you are a family that goes away a lot and you pay nanny for that, no need to increase vacation of her choice IMO. We always try to coordinate so we don't have to deal with back up. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. If you give set number every employee will make sure to use it up. If you don't have a number hardly any days will be used. That's my personal experience, anyway, as an employee and employer too. [ Reply | More ]

WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? “…getting education for free…” “…entitlement… expecting Uncle Sam to take care of you…” Where are you from? How did you develop such a warped perception of the world, let alone the public school system? Public schools are funded with tax dollars. Taxes I’ve been paying for the past 18 yrs & taxes that I will continue to pay long after my now 10-month old daughter has graduated high school. A 12-year education where she will have the opportunity to interact with kids from all different backgrounds with all different abilities. And when she graduates she’ll be able to interact with the people around her. Unlike you. [ Reply | More ]

in both the private and public process there are normal people who are sane about it, normal people who become a bit crazed because of the process (this is the majority), and then people who are just crazed and competitive about school stuff in general. but those categories aren't determined by public vs private. neither private or public mom are any worse or better than the other.
