[ - ] The article said Collegiate won't send transcript to colleges you applied to if you went against their advice. These schools limit you to apply to only 8 colleges and won't help you if you apply to more? Why the hell are they telling the kids what to do? 50 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Because they are brokering the dcs that's why. You don't think that the collegiate and brearley applications get thrown into the same pile at the PS whatever do you? every one of those applications has been discussed by the counselor and the admissions dept and tagged. applying early admission and getting accepted is an obligation to attend. college admissions offices communicate with each other, and they do find out those bad eggs who are playing the field so to speak. collegiate is right to curb such a nasty practice. [ Reply | More ]

np. ITA. And the college adviser would have made this crystal clear to the student before he applied ED. These are not little children. They make choices and need to deal with the consequences. If the school made a practice of supporting students who back out of their ED accepts people here would be shrieking about entitlement. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not crazy, you're ignorant. They CAN'T make it legally binding; they can't FORCE a student to attend a particular school or forbid him to attend any other schools. Think about it. Applying ED is exactly like sending a FC letter. And aside from the moral implications of breaking your word, going back on an ED acceptance screws the dc's college counselor in the same way going back on a FC letter screws your PSD. So of course the college counselors aren't going to support students who try to do that. [ Reply | More ]

Whatever article this is, is completely wrong. My son just graduated from Collegiate last month and the application process is tailored individually. So while one boy might only apply to 3 schools, there were others who applied to 10 or more. And, if the boy wants to go to a school that Wendy hasn't suggested and has a good rationale for applying there, she will certainly send out transcripts and support the application in every way. It's an incredible school with an amazing college guidance department, which is part of the reason that around 35% of the class of 2008 is attending HYP next year. [ Reply | More ]

I can understand why some weak or middling students might need to apply more broadly, but otherwise I agree with you. If the college counselor is good at helping students determine what they want and what's realistic, 8 colleges is more than enough for most kids. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. 8 colleges with a good range should be more than enough for almost everyone, especially if they're not trying to hold themselves to a higer standard than they can meet. I'm sure there are legacies to Harvard but "good to legacies" does not mean automatic admission. You should read "The Price of Admission." The HYP legacies that get the real advantages are the ones who donate A LOT of money (millions) or are incredibly well connected (think George Bush). Your average legacy may get thrown in a different pile during the admit process but there are no guarantees. [ Reply | More ]

As an HYP legacy, I was always told it isn't necessarily about major $$. It's about consistent giving and consistent involvement, ie interviewing, fund raising, etc. Giving what you can -- ie a few hundred bucks a year when you're just out of school. Anyway, wanted to ask, what is the Price of Admission? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, its true. Legacies always have an inside lane on non-legacies. And if you are not just a legacy but a sibling, then you are way ahead of the game. Its like that at schools, colleges, golf clubs...which are "exclusive" and have much more demand than supply. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I think it's really amazing that people are deciding on which Kindergarten to send dc's to based on college exmissions. It's 13 years from now for god's sake and how do you know what your child wants to be or study 13 years from now? Do people really think life is only worth living if they attend HYP or whatever? Are our kids allowed to think about every career choice available to them? 42 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It all depends on what you think you're buying. $30K per year, per child, is a lot of money. I'm guessing that some people view college exmissions as one measure of what they're buying. I think it's a relevant factor to look at, but of course none of us know what type of student our kids will be at age 17, and where their strengths/interests lie. But undergrad is pretty general anyway, too. BTW, before you flame, we can't even afford private! [ Reply | More ]

i used to agree with you. until my dd entered the public school system. we were in a good zoned school, but frankly, the reason my dc thrived was because of who he is, not because of the school. so we applied to privates and are going. and exmissions means something to me as part of a whole. it translates to academic rigor. of course, now people will say 'i went to public and i went to harvard.' still, in the interim -- it means something, [ Reply | More ]

I am you in some ways, but only because I'm worried about the increasing emphasis on standardized test prep in public, which sort of translates into INCREASED academic rigor, but I'm pretty confident that DC will more or less ace any test. I'd be delighted if DC became a plumber or electrician, useful and pretty much recession-proof. I just want DC to be happy and honest and have a comfortable life, the most appropriate path to getting there is still up in the air and I want to maintain maximum options. [ Reply | More ]
