[ - ] Does anyone know if it's true that the same thing has happened at PS 41 and 3 that happened at PS 234. That not every family in the catchment zone got a spot and some are now being assigned to random schools anywhere in the district? I have a friend who says she knows more than one family in this situation, but I haven't heard it from anywhere else. Can anyone verify? Sorry if this is a repost -- my first one didn't seem to show up. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

this is what i heard. i don't think anyone is being sent to a random school. don't forget 3 has more slots this year because they aren't taking dcs from out of the zone (they typically took quite a few). and this includes dcs in pre-k who thought once they were in, they were in. fwiw, everyone i know who fc'd 41 got in. the whole thing really means nothing if you have the mindset that only 5 colleges matter. there are dozens of excellent colleges and universities and you have no idea where any of these kids applied, so it all really means nothing. Some kids actually only want to go to small liberal arts colleges and don't bother to apply to HYP even though they may well have been accepted had they applied. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, I have a lot to say on this topic, because I've done it a few times now and had the same concerns, as well as the same crazy, paranoid hubby! I kind of agree with your DH about the Villas, unless they're on the property of a nice resort. We did this at 4 Seasons Nevis and felt very secure. Having said that, babyproofing an entire villa would be difficult, but the kitchen could be indispensable. First of all on the plane, one word...Benadryl. Loved it. He slept a good portion of the flights both from NY-CA as well as CA-Hawaii, and we tried to schedule flights during his typical naptime. I am also someone who "created" a child who enjoys darkness and relative quiet, so I was freaked out about where he would sleep and what DH and I would do once he was down. The first excursion to the Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel was a JOKE. DS slept in the (huge) bathroom in the hotel crib starting at 8pm, so DH and I had to pee and brush before bed in the LOBBY bathroom!! The Ritz was amazing between the baby amenities, baby-proffing and fast room service for meals and bottles, but nothing could really solve the sleeping issue. I wised up the 2nd half of the trip to the 4 Seasons Maui and we got a suite with a separate livingarea/bedroom. This was the BEST decision! We could put DS down for the night, but still had our own bedroom and bathroom so we could watch TV, have sex, eat etc w/o disturbing him. We were there with the entire family so we even got nights out while my Mom or MIL babysat in the bedroom where they could read, watch TV etc. while DS slept in the livingroom. Nomatter where he slept, in the bathroom, or the expansive livingroom, he slept through the night and was fine, it was US that suffered depending. I have friends that have also put the hotel crib inside a big closet, and that would also solve the bathroom issue, as well as be a lot cheaper than getting a suite. Either way, if you're staying at one of the nicer resorts, the eating/bottle thing will be a breeze as they know what to expect and will typically bend over backwards to help. The 4 Seasons even set up pack n play's by the pool or beach so DS could nap during the day! Can't beat that! Bottom line is, try to enjoy, but def. plan ahead so you CAN enjoy. There's nothing worse on a vacation than a jet-lagged, cranky, overtired baby. Sometimes I wonder if we should give up on big vacations with the kids until they're older? Sure would save money and stress! Good luck to you! AM [ Reply | More ]

That is an amazing statistic, but I feel like the honors kids at top public HS might also do very well. It's like just honors-level kids? [ Reply | More ]

I went to a public school I would estimate that the top 20% was admitted to top schools. Many chose to go to less prestigious schools for scholarships though. [ Reply | More ]

That compares to almost 70% of kids from some of these top private schools that go to a top 25 college. Even some of the best public school in the area like Bronxville are not even close in the % of kids that get into to 25 universities. Its does not mean that no kids get in though - even 20% is a decent number. [ Reply | More ]

Part of the reason so many students from private schools go to top colleges is because no one lets them apply to schools outside some magical list of schools. My friends daughter wanted to apply to a few liberal arts colleges in the midwest with great writing programs. No one would support her. So she went to Brown, and dropped out. [ Reply | More ]

The points was that they can get into the schools. I am sure that happens, but it is the exception rather than the rule. Kids are encouraged to apply to some long-shots, some realistic choices and some safeties. [ Reply | More ]

What use is it to get a kid into a school where they would be miserable? I could have gotten into the University of Wisconsin. But I would have been miserable there. I went to Bryn Mawr and loved it. [ Reply | More ]

I had a REALLY bad case. In my case I was temporarily paralyzed as it attacked a key nerve. I had daily IVs for 30 days, which I self adminstered and had a visiting nurse help 1x per week. It was beyond scary. If you are not feeling well after the initial course of antibiotics SEE AN EXPERT. [ Reply | More ]

^^^also, make sure the lab runs both the lyme titer AND the Western blot and these tests should be rerun after treatment AT THE SAME LAB to get accurate monitoring. [ Reply | More ]

np: I was also really sick from Lyme. 6 months of IV antibiotics, multiple hospital stays, nearly had a pacemaker put it (started improving days before the surgery, made them wait since it would have been permanent). We are a very small percentage of people who get it - more than 90% of people just need two weeks of oral antibiotics. [ Reply | More ]
