I was just looking at the list of top 100 Gold Medal HS's on the US New and World Report. I didn't see Hunter on there. I saw Stuyvesant (15), Bronx HS of Science (20), Staten Island Tech (22), Brooklyn Tech (39), and NEST (74). Nowhere did I see a mention of Hunter. Why is that so? This list is supposed to comprise the 100 top High Schools in the US. It is pretty amazing that Nest made it considering the school has only been around since 2001. Maybe Hunter elementary school is stronger than the High School. If anyone wants to take a look for themselves, here is the link. http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/high-schools/2007/11/29/gold-medal-schools.html [ Reply | More ]

This year, half of the middle school students from NEST will be going to Stuyvesant, LaGuardia, Brookyn Tech and Bronx HS of Science. While Nest is a great HS, the others are larger and have more to offer. My DC is at NEST now going into first grade. I wonder what the HS is going to be like by the time he is ready for HS. Another NEST parent: I think that many high school kids, by the time they have spent 9 years at the same small school, are going to look forward to a change. My son is also entering 1st Grade at NEST. If he has no desire to change high schools come the time, I will be disappointed. I don't think staying with the same small group of peers for 13 years is healthy. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the DCs in HS at Nest had to test in when they were admitted. The whole not having to test anymore was only implemented last year so it remains to be seen what the effect will be. From my experience, the only ones who pump up G&T and constantly compare to private are people who a) could not get into private b) didn't want to fork over the $ for private but have friends and relatives they need to keep up with. Regular public school parents who would never have considered private an option pretty much know G&T is ok but it's not the be all end all. And we're glad your kid didn't get in private because you fund our trips, TAs and specials. [ Reply | More ]

Just because DD is going to G&T doesn't mean she'll get into a top public high school, but it's true that there's a trend at top colleges with big endowments to recruit more middle and working class students (eg Harvard). College placement at Stuy, Bronx Sci etc are great and likely to get better now that more top students won't feel priced out of expensive colleges. [ Reply | More ]

I haven't looked at the stats, but Stuy and BS are HUGE schools,so you would have to look at percentages, not absolute numbers. And it's probably more meaningful to look at the % of kids who got their first choice; for financial reasons, many public school kids choose good state schools or whichever school offers the most FA. Also, for non-legacy students, the choices they make are different. [ Reply | More ]

321 is great, but overcrowded & they will likely rezone in the next 2 years. DOE is really trying to make you stick to your zoned school starting next yr. Lots of up & coming schools b/c of baby boom, but if have $ best: 321, 29, 107...261, 154, 10, 8, 39 [ Reply | More ]

321 and 107 in Park Slope had the highest ELA/Math scores, especially the % of 4's, which means above grade level. After that they are all fairly similar: 29, 261, 58, Children's School, New School. Don't know about 39, although it's also supposed to be good. I think beyond those schools, you need to think about what you want. 321 is notorious for overcrowding now. My kids are at 58, and many people like it because it has a dual language French program, strings program, and is very small compared to some of the other schools. But they all have strengths and weaknesses -- inside schools is a good source for you. [ Reply | More ]

I noticed that the scores for PS 107 in Park Slope were amazing this year. Higher than 321, and way higher than 29. I don't know what they are doing, but something right -- nearly every single kid is at least at grade level, with a huge percentage way above. [ Reply | More ]

you have to get married within any Mormon temple - not only the one in SLC - but that "seals" for time and all eternity as a family. That is also why they want to baptize people who were never baptized (or even Christian apparently). It's all for the "after" [ Reply | More ]
