Just want to say that I am happy that dd is going to a G & T. I have heard that college placement from a top nyc public can be better than HM, Dalton, and all the other top tier privates! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You don't know, all it would take would be for the kids already there to be willing to stay instead of jumping ship to Hunter or Stuy. It could happen. [ Reply | More ]

np: that is why I doubt NEST will change too quickly. But that said, (my son is at NEST) I could see the small school keeping some from leaving. [ Reply | More ]

I was just looking at the list of top 100 Gold Medal HS's on the US New and World Report. I didn't see Hunter on there. I saw Stuyvesant (15), Bronx HS of Science (20), Staten Island Tech (22), Brooklyn Tech (39), and NEST (74). Nowhere did I see a mention of Hunter. Why is that so? This list is supposed to comprise the 100 top High Schools in the US. It is pretty amazing that Nest made it considering the school has only been around since 2001. Maybe Hunter elementary school is stronger than the High School. If anyone wants to take a look for themselves, here is the link. http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/high-schools/2007/11/29/gold-medal-schools.html [ Reply | More ]

hunter was not included because of a loophole. that list has been discussed here before--i'm sure you can search. and i think many agree the list is pretty suspect and the criteria sort of off. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter is not a DOE school. They don't take all the Regents exams that DOE schools do (they take some) and state tests is how the article ranked the schools. [ Reply | More ]

All I can say is NEST has a very, very, very long way to go before it can be even mentioned in the same breath as Stuyvesant, Science and Hunter in terms of college admissions. [ Reply | More ]

Its just smaller and is all that (and maybe a bag of chips). Stuyvesant is a more prestigous school and its so much bigger and therefore can offer more courses. By any chance, are you the famous UB Nest basher? [ Reply | More ]

Just wondering how someone can have an opinion about a schoo that they have no experience with. Nest and the local school in my neighborhood are the only schools that I have an opinion about. That is because those are the only schools I have experience with. I was just wonderin how people can make such strong statements about things they are not directly involved with. [ Reply | More ]

you don't have to have dcs at nest to know that many apply out for hs. i'm not sure why you are claiming that's a strong statement. it's simply a fact. [ Reply | More ]

This year, half of the middle school students from NEST will be going to Stuyvesant, LaGuardia, Brookyn Tech and Bronx HS of Science. While Nest is a great HS, the others are larger and have more to offer. My DC is at NEST now going into first grade. I wonder what the HS is going to be like by the time he is ready for HS. Anyone know why BARD HS wasn't on the list? [ Reply | More ]

Another NEST parent: I think that many high school kids, by the time they have spent 9 years at the same small school, are going to look forward to a change. My son is also entering 1st Grade at NEST. If he has no desire to change high schools come the time, I will be disappointed. I don't think staying with the same small group of peers for 13 years is healthy. [ Reply | More ]

ittta. and saying, well the dcs were smart when they were tested at age 4, therefore it's the next bronx science makes no sense. a great school has a great admin and great teachers. nest may get there, but it isn't there yet. and the best hs are ones that dcs test into in hs. because that's when it's most accurate. Well, the DCs in HS at Nest had to test in when they were admitted. The whole not having to test anymore was only implemented last year so it remains to be seen what the effect will be. It also think that everyone should take note that the top schools on this list are Gen Ed schools in other states that don't test kids for admissions. [ Reply | More ]

From my experience, the only ones who pump up G&T and constantly compare to private are people who a) could not get into private b) didn't want to fork over the $ for private but have friends and relatives they need to keep up with. Regular public school parents who would never have considered private an option pretty much know G&T is ok but it's not the be all end all. And we're glad your kid didn't get in private because you fund our trips, TAs and specials. [ Reply | More ]

without generalizing too much -- it's true that private is mostly a financial decision. Most who can go private, do go private. For those who really can't afford it, fa doesn't really cover all the expenses of private (birthdays, etc, etc although there are funds for that). [ Reply | More ]

Just because DD is going to G&T doesn't mean she'll get into a top public high school, but it's true that there's a trend at top colleges with big endowments to recruit more middle and working class students (eg Harvard). College placement at Stuy, Bronx Sci etc are great and likely to get better now that more top students won't feel priced out of expensive colleges. [ Reply | More ]

I haven't looked at the stats, but Stuy and BS are HUGE schools,so you would have to look at percentages, not absolute numbers. And it's probably more meaningful to look at the % of kids who got their first choice; for financial reasons, many public school kids choose good state schools or whichever school offers the most FA. Also, for non-legacy students, the choices they make are different. [ Reply | More ]

Harvard is offering free tuition and boarding for children from families making under 65K (I think this is the number now) and charging 10% of hhi to families making up to 200K (again, this is from memory). [ Reply | More ]

I think geographical diversity is as much of an issue as socioeconomic. Students from NYC are relatively less attractive to the East Coast colleges because they are a dime a dozen. This makes placement tough for privates and tough for selective publics. If you care so much about Harvard, move to Boise. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter HS will send 4 kids to Princeton, 4 kids to Yale (out of 8 accepted) and 5 to Harvard (out of 8 accepted). I don't know how many in the senior class this year - it's usually around 180. [ Reply | More ]

No G&T placement will prevent your DD from getting knocked up by her biker boyfriend at 16, dropping out of school, and facing a career of either being a nanny for wenches like yourself, or working at the local Dairy Queen getting hit on by pot-bellied, middle-aged truckers. [ Reply | More ]
