Seriously? For four lousy pounds? Not nice of OB to give you a hard time about that. I gained 12 lbs in the first tri--which is more than average--and went on to have slower weight gain the rest of pregnancy. My final weight gain before baby arrived was around 35 lbs, which is more or less normal. I suggest you don't worry about the weight too much; eat healthfully when you're hungry and exercise. The rest is up to mother nature. And if this comment from your md bugs you enough, consider finding a new doc. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Find me a burb!! I'm in my late 30s, work at an international nonprofit, husband is a psychotherapist. We live in Greenpoint and love the vibe but are pining for more space and a yard for our 2 young kids. We love alternative music, the arts and mid-century modernist design and architecture, eat mostly local/organic food, and own a Subaru Outback. So pretty down to earth yet funky and adventurous. Others frequently say that we're very "west coast" (ie, northern CA, P.NW) but we can't tear ourselves away from our families and friends to actually move there. Money is definitely an issue (probably can spend up to $650 on a home) and we don't want some insane commute or a bad public school district. The areas that so far have interested us are Nyack, Croton, and Sea Cliff, but looking for new ideas since none of these is ideal. Are we wishing for something that doesn't exist around here? Thanks for your help 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The reality is exactly as the article states--as more Ivy-League universities seek and help the less-than-privileged in this country, it's going to become harder and harder for the dime a dozen over-achievers from elite private schools to stand out and get a spot. The reality is as I stated. This happens. It happened in the 70s, the 80s, the 90s and will continue to happen on off years. Yes, colleges can afford more economic diversity and in the 80s they wanted racial diversity but in the end they will always want the best educated and whether you want to believe that or not the largest group of those dcs will always come from the top schools in the US of which many in NYC privates are counted. I think you are ignoring that I just pointed out to you that there have always been measures taken to diversify the classes at HYP and this one for economic diversity, afforded more easily now in many cases than the past, is this decades trend. I agree that it happens to all schools every few years. I went to school with 3 of my siblings (same hs) all 2 years apart and all 3 grades did very differently in exmissions. It really depends on the kids. One of my siblings had an exceptionally smart grade, other sibling's grade was a bunch of partiers, and mine was in the middle as far as academic achievement. I always thought some grades have better peers than others as far as competition, brains, sports etc. its not all about the school [ Reply | More ]
