Children aren't interchangable in the private-school world, but in general ed publics they basically are. If someone in a good zone isn't going to send their dc to public, it would be a great option to transfer that seat to an out-of-district friend or family member in a less-desirable zone. I realize there are probably many inherent problems here, but on the other hand, it could be a life-saver for many families. [ Reply | More ]

OP: ITA with both of you. have her pick out the outfit the night before. pack lunch and the backpack the night before, and make sure you're up, dressed and ready to go before she wakes up. this is what works for us, but I also don't have a baby to care for, too! [ Reply | More ]

pick out clothes tonight. Plan, if not pack, lunch. Tell dd the new morning rule is taht she gets dressed RIGHT AWAY when she gets out of bed--nothing else first except peeing. Period. Give me firmer boundaries as far as schedule, not just "1.5 hours to get everything done." This works like a charm for mine. Today was our first day of camp too, we had to leave hte house at 7:15, were up at 7, were still on time! [ Reply | More ]

op: clothes and lunch were planned. I didn't actually tell her she had 1.5 hours; I told her she had to dress now, that she had 15 minutes to eat, etc. She spent a lot of time looking out the window (despite my telling her to get dressed etc) and lying on the floor screaming b/c I was telling her to hurry up. v frustrating. I'm impressed that you are able to get everything accomplished in 15 minutes -- nothing happens in my house that quickly! [ Reply | More ]

off the top of my head, the property we're looking at has one violation, the girder needs "fixing" for lack of better words, the house itself needs updating, there is evidence of termites but we don't know the extent of damage (if any), there is a tree in the backyard that needs to be taken down as it may come down on the roof, there's more that i can't remember at the moment. are we to only negotiate on things that need to be done right away? there is also evidence of fire - so the roofing (or some part of it) will need to be done within five years as it wasn't repaired correctly... Ok i am assuming you just love this house and will not walk despite these problems. You need to have additional inspections by specialists 1) structural engineer who can address girders and roof 2) termite/pest control. The tree will cost about $1-2k. to come down and probably shouldn't be includedin your negotiation as it is an evident issue (and you have bigger fish to fry). Assuming you are committed to the house I would bring a parade of experts in before signing P & S. This way you have written documentation of the problems (and the Seller is forced to disclose these problems if they do not agree to your terms). Based on what you are saying I would ask for $25k. and neg. from their. Make sure to get coverage for a termite warranty too. [ Reply | More ]

we did get an engineer to inspect the home - he was the one who gave us all this information...? the thing with the tree is, they would need to find a way to get the parts of the tree out of the backyard - through the house? the basement? - there is no access to the backyard otherwise...does it matter? I am not referring to a Home Inspection (these are cursory at best) fwiw, make sure a structural engineer looks at the issues - he will give you the estimate which you will give to Seller. The tree can be mulched on site unless there is some dramatic issue with it. In a negotiation for a house you are only going to get money off for issues that were not known or disclosed prior. So the tree isn't going to fly - the roof, girder, termites, yes. [ Reply | More ]

^^ Dont be afraid to pay a few bucks up front to get estimates and professional advice before you commit to this property. $4k. in information is small potatoes if it means avoiding a mistake on the magnitude of hundreds of thousands. And remember that whatever your experts turn up and you tell the Sellers they are REQUIRED to disclose to subsequent Buyers. This is a huge negotiation factor for your Agent because once a house goes BOM it already is tainted. [ Reply | More ]

Under this year's rules, you would be able to apply for citywide and any G&T program in your District. However, this year no 97s got citywide unless they were a sibling of an existing student. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Actually, I don't know if any 97s got into TAG. It's possible but I doubt it. [ Reply | More ]

this year you would have been able to rank all three citywides (but probably not gotten into any of them) and any g&t in your district. not all g&ts in brooklyn. but it will no doubt change. [ Reply | More ]

brooklyn parent here with 99 child; our list included 3 citywide, plus 3 or 4 in district - we could pick 3, ranking 1st-3rd choice. [ Reply | More ]

what do you mean you could only pick three? was that this year? If you cannot rank all of them how could the DOE guarantee your child a spot? [ Reply | More ]

We were supposed to rank 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice - I don't think we were supposed to rank every school listed (if so, I misread instructions...) [ Reply | More ]

Got 1st choice regardless. We would have gone to zoned school if hadn't gotten into top 3. [ Reply | More ]

unless your dd scores 99, you don't really have a shot at Anderson or NEST as a non sib. Plus, even if your dd has 99, it's still a slim chance since there are hundreds of 99ers. [ Reply | More ]
