First day of camp did not go well (not the camp itself, but getting dd there). She had 1.5 hours to get dressed, eat breakfast and brush her teeth, and we were still 1/2 hour late. I had previously talked to her about what she had to do to be ready for camp in the morning, and tried to give her plenty of time to get stuff done. What can I do differently tomorrow so it's not such a nightmare? tia [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Isn't it your responsibility to keep her on time? I have issues with my kids getting ready too but it is my job to make sure it happens. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. I have a 5 yr old dd too, and I have to stay in the room with her to make sure she doesn't take too long getting dressed etc in the morning. [ Reply | More ]

OP: ITA with both of you. I was putting together her lunch, her snack, her backpack, feeding and dressing and changing the baby, brushing dd's hair and preparing her breakfast, cleaning up after breakfast, and getting myself dressed and ready to go. I picked out her clothes for her, she just had to put them on (which is something she normally does). So I'm trying to figure out how to make it work better tomorrow. [ Reply | More ]

have her pick out the outfit the night before. pack lunch and the backpack the night before, and make sure you're up, dressed and ready to go before she wakes up. this is what works for us, but I also don't have a baby to care for, too! [ Reply | More ]

pick out clothes tonight. Plan, if not pack, lunch. Tell dd the new morning rule is taht she gets dressed RIGHT AWAY when she gets out of bed--nothing else first except peeing. Period. Give me firmer boundaries as far as schedule, not just "1.5 hours to get everything done." This works like a charm for mine. Today was our first day of camp too, we had to leave hte house at 7:15, were up at 7, were still on time! [ Reply | More ]

op: clothes and lunch were planned. I didn't actually tell her she had 1.5 hours; I told her she had to dress now, that she had 15 minutes to eat, etc. She spent a lot of time looking out the window (despite my telling her to get dressed etc) and lying on the floor screaming b/c I was telling her to hurry up. v frustrating. I'm impressed that you are able to get everything accomplished in 15 minutes -- nothing happens in my house that quickly! [ Reply | More ]

yk, it used to be a BIG problem for us too. I'm trying to think what I did besides what I already said that changed it so radically. I just really worked to get dd on board with feeling like we needed to work as a team in the mornings. [ Reply | More ]

OP:ok, thanks for the suggestions -- I had tried to be prepared (gone over everything with her over the weekend as to what had to happen etc) but obviously it didn't work quite as planned! Will try some of the tips here for tomorrow -- maybe today was hard for her in part b/c it was the first day. I don't mind so much re: camp, but I'm concerned about when she starts school (even earlier) in the fall, where they really do care if you are late! [ Reply | More ]
