the book, "NYC's Best Public Elementary Schools" is not objective. It talks up most public school, making them seem better than they really are. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

That's because it's about the authors' picks for the "best." Insideschools has some pretty harsh reviews of not-so-good schools. [ Reply | More ]

insideschools' user reviews may be harsh, but the on-site review are very similar to that book's [ Reply | More ]

No, only the reviews of the schools they think are the best are similar to the book's. The reviews of the schools they think are bad, are harsh. [ Reply | More ]

eh, the author picked the schools that according to her are the best public schools. How can this ever be objective? This is not a private vs public debate or something. [ Reply | More ]

It's like the New York Times article in the Real Estate section - What it's like to live in X. They'll do a place with relatively crappy schools or ugly houses or a long commute and make it sound great. [ Reply | More ]

That is true and same for the middle school and high school books. Those books talk about a few schools I worked in and over my dead body would I consider them. Still, it is worth a read - just take it with a grain of salt. [ Reply | More ]

I would have to agree that this is true for my zoned public school. [ Reply | More ]

Totally agree. My zoned school, in Brooklyn sucks donkey, yet from the Insideschools review you'd be happy to send your kid there. [ Reply | More ]

because I am very sure that it is a good enough school. it is just you and some others who think that it sucks donkey. It's just like my zoned school. It got an okay review on insideschools but it is shunned by so many families for absolutely no other reason because the school is "known" to be bad. [ Reply | More ]

you start with the book, www.insideschools.org, read the statistics on schools.nyc.gov, pick the ones that you have a good gut feeling about, tour them, talk to the parent coordinators, interview current parents. [ Reply | More ]
