I am not a fan of Dalton but you have to understand that not every school, and yes even the tt, has a great year every year with colleges. Not only that it isn't new. I graduated in '85 from one of the same type of schools and the college admissions were awful do awful they threatened to fire the guidance counselor. It happens. It doesn't mean anything substantial. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Why did they fire the guidance counselor then? [ Reply | More ]

because everyone always thinks when something has happened it is the first and only time. It happened five years later at the same school after four years of great exmissions and that time they did fire the counselor. [ Reply | More ]

The reality is exactly as the article states--as more Ivy-League universities seek and help the less-than-privileged in this country, it's going to become harder and harder for the dime a dozen over-achievers from elite private schools to stand out and get a spot. And it's about time, as far as I'm concerned... [ Reply | More ]

Not bitter at all. What's the matter, are you afraid little Muffy's spot at Harvard might be taken by an lower-middle-class kid? [ Reply | More ]

You have no idea what my background is, and no absolutely not. Where 'muffy' goes to college is not as important to me as where 'muffy' gets an education before she gets to college. [ Reply | More ]

and you have no idea what my background is either, so let's avoid the "bitter" accusation, shall we? [ Reply | More ]

Your response completely ignored OPs statement from experience that this happens and has for a long time period. [ Reply | More ]

My response wasn't specifically addressing OP's point, but the point of the article in general. It's a broader issue that goes beyond the fluctuations of any school's exmissions. [ Reply | More ]

But colleges are always looking for students that will make their class seem diverse. Either economic, social, racial, religious but the backbone will always remain this core group [ Reply | More ]

I don't think that's necessarily true, and I think that it will be more difficult for NYC private school kids in years to come (and btw, my kid is one of them). [ Reply | More ]

Well, people have been saying that since the 60s. Doubt now it will suddenly ring true. I was one of these students in the 80s and my sister one in the 90s and my mother in the 50s and now my dd as well. The more things 'change' the more they stay the same. [ Reply | More ]

The reality is as I stated. This happens. It happened in the 70s, the 80s, the 90s and will continue to happen on off years. Yes, colleges can afford more economic diversity and in the 80s they wanted racial diversity but in the end they will always want the best educated and whether you want to believe that or not the largest group of those dcs will always come from the top schools in the US of which many in NYC privates are counted. I think you are ignoring that I just pointed out to you that there have always been measures taken to diversify the classes at HYP and this one for economic diversity, afforded more easily now in many cases than the past, is this decades trend. However, the core of the group they draw from - maybe not dalton this year but overwhelmingly Chapin or Trinity - will always be drawn from these schools. [ Reply | More ]

okay, and FWIW, either way it means nothing to me I was only offering up my own first hand experience here for 46 years not trying to win the race in anyway. more diversity is fine with me and so is my dc going to syracuse university [ Reply | More ]

I agree that it happens to all schools every few years. I went to school with 3 of my siblings (same hs) all 2 years apart and all 3 grades did very differently in exmissions. It really depends on the kids. One of my siblings had an exceptionally smart grade, other sibling's grade was a bunch of partiers, and mine was in the middle as far as academic achievement. I always thought some grades have better peers than others as far as competition, brains, sports etc. its not all about the school [ Reply | More ]
