But how are we defining top 10? Amherst or Williams are amazing colleges. But would be stifling for a student who would thrive at Cornell or Johns Hopkins. How do we define the top 10 while making sure that we have a list that is inclusive of environments suited for all top students? [ Reply | More ]

Doesn't that depend more on your child and his interests than what school he went to for K-12? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.30.08, 01:53 PM Flag

It depends on everything, and though your kids' interests and abilities (and luck) have a lot to with it, the school they go plays a big role as well. I know it did in my case (Williams College) and in my brother's case (UPenn) and in my husbands (Columbia). Not sure we would have gotten into these schools if we would have gone to a random public school. [ Reply | More ]

I would like to think so but I would be kidding myself. When applying to these over-subscribed schools every little thing counts. I certainly did not have the best grades or test scores, nor was a stand-out athlete. In my case it was certainly the entire package - the school being one of the main part of it. [ Reply | More ]

I went to a public school I would estimate that the top 20% was admitted to top schools. Many chose to go to less prestigious schools for scholarships though. [ Reply | More ]

That compares to almost 70% of kids from some of these top private schools that go to a top 25 college. Even some of the best public school in the area like Bronxville are not even close in the % of kids that get into to 25 universities. Its does not mean that no kids get in though - even 20% is a decent number. [ Reply | More ]

Part of the reason so many students from private schools go to top colleges is because no one lets them apply to schools outside some magical list of schools. My friends daughter wanted to apply to a few liberal arts colleges in the midwest with great writing programs. No one would support her. So she went to Brown, and dropped out. [ Reply | More ]

The points was that they can get into the schools. I am sure that happens, but it is the exception rather than the rule. Kids are encouraged to apply to some long-shots, some realistic choices and some safeties. [ Reply | More ]

What use is it to get a kid into a school where they would be miserable? I could have gotten into the University of Wisconsin. But I would have been miserable there. I went to Bryn Mawr and loved it. [ Reply | More ]
