I think it's really amazing that people are deciding on which Kindergarten to send dc's to based on college exmissions. It's 13 years from now for god's sake and how do you know what your child wants to be or study 13 years from now? Do people really think life is only worth living if they attend HYP or whatever? Are our kids allowed to think about every career choice available to them? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It all depends on what you think you're buying. $30K per year, per child, is a lot of money. I'm guessing that some people view college exmissions as one measure of what they're buying. I think it's a relevant factor to look at, but of course none of us know what type of student our kids will be at age 17, and where their strengths/interests lie. But undergrad is pretty general anyway, too. BTW, before you flame, we can't even afford private! [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Oh yeah, one more thing. I don't think anyone is "deciding" where to send their kid based solely on college exmissions. [ Reply | More ]

What is so wrong with that? So does public. It's THEIR choice to spend their money on private school. Why is that so threatening to you? [ Reply | More ]

Well I think it is a sign that today anyway the school has a strong relationship with top schools and a solid reputation with those schools. And that these schools think that children from these schools are prepared etc. MY PROBLEM is that a lot can change at a school in 13 years. [ Reply | More ]

Oh god do you know how silly you all sound? Maybe Trinity will try to replace Dr M with another person well connected to Harvard, but Trinity admissions people kept saying how they want their kids to go to no name colleges. I almost spit out non-existing coffee through my nostrils. [ Reply | More ]

ITTTA! Half of these women are going to get a rude awakening when a dozen years from now their children announce they have no intention of going to college, and instead want to be plumbers or electricians. [ Reply | More ]

Absolutely not. But apparently there IS to these wenches who seem to think that life isn't worth living unless there's an Ivy League degree attached to it. Otherwise they wouldn't be obsessing over these schools in the first place. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I'm going to choose the best public option I can for my kid (private not a possibility). Ex-missions may be a factor, but not the only factor. Of course, I'll be thinking about middle school more than college. [ Reply | More ]

i used to agree with you. until my dd entered the public school system. we were in a good zoned school, but frankly, the reason my dc thrived was because of who he is, not because of the school. so we applied to privates and are going. and exmissions means something to me as part of a whole. it translates to academic rigor. of course, now people will say 'i went to public and i went to harvard.' still, in the interim -- it means something, [ Reply | More ]

I am you in some ways, but only because I'm worried about the increasing emphasis on standardized test prep in public, which sort of translates into INCREASED academic rigor, but I'm pretty confident that DC will more or less ace any test. I'd be delighted if DC became a plumber or electrician, useful and pretty much recession-proof. I just want DC to be happy and honest and have a comfortable life, the most appropriate path to getting there is still up in the air and I want to maintain maximum options. [ Reply | More ]
