We just hired a new nanny. She had been with the previous family for over 10 years, so there are things we are not offering her that she had attained through time there. One being vacation. He offered her three weeks paid vacation, plus unlimited sick days (within reason) and nine federal holidays. Do you think that is fair? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think two weeks, plus federal holidays (whichever you have off) at about 5 paid sick days are fair. [ Reply | More ]

But, you should have incentives for long service- so the vacation days should increase each year [ Reply | More ]

So you START at 2 weeks and add a few days each year. You can't start with zero paid time off. [ Reply | More ]

Ours has been with us 6.5 years and has always had one week whenever she wants and one week when we're on vacation - minimum. We always take 2 weeks in the summer, often 8 - 9 days at Xmas, so right there she's at 3.5 or 4... Plus she's off whenever either of us is. We've never thought about increasing the vaca days -- she gets as much or more than we do. [ Reply | More ]

Not really. If you are a family that goes away a lot and you pay nanny for that, no need to increase vacation of her choice IMO. We always try to coordinate so we don't have to deal with back up. [ Reply | More ]

What do you mean? We don't take her on vacation with us, she gets vacation time when we are away on vacation. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, 3 weeks is not that much at all. I'd make sure she takes at least 2 of them at the same time with you though. [ Reply | More ]

OMG! Fair boarding on generous. It is probably too late but I think it is good to spell out the number of sick days. You can know in your heart that you would be flexible if need be, but otherwise... [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. If you give set number every employee will make sure to use it up. If you don't have a number hardly any days will be used. That's my personal experience, anyway, as an employee and employer too. [ Reply | More ]

Where you work, people call in sick when they aren't just to use up their days? That is sick. [ Reply | More ]

Of course they do, are you kidding me? Why do you think so many 'sick days' are Mondays or Fridays? [ Reply | More ]

While I see your point, my worry would be that she is used to getting 5 weeks so "sick days" might become her way of evening thing out. [ Reply | More ]

Then it should not take too long to figure out and we will just have to treat her like the less than mature person we thought she was and specify that she has 3 or 5 sicks days per year. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt first. [ Reply | More ]

Something like 5 weeks? Not sure. Ten years is a long time so anything is possible. There was not upside in me asking! [ Reply | More ]
