[ - ] Help-today i got so frustrated with my 6 year old for not listening in smacked him (not hard) in the head with my hand--like bonked his forehead. I accidentally grazed right above his eye where it's quite sensitive. I feel awful. I apologized with him for doing this, and he said "nobody's perfect mom", but I feel so awful. I probably get this upset like 3-4 times a month. I am stopping lexapro, which I took due to anger/depression issues and I feel so much better, but occasionally these "sparks" of anger return, and very suddenly. Any advice? Signed, feeling guilty and sad. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know what to say, I'm not totally opposed to a smack on the butt, when my child does something like runs out into the middle of the street, but smacking in the face is just a loss of control, and I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but it's serious, my mother had that uncontrolled spastic anger and it was really so degrading. Get some thearapy, parenting is stressful and we all make mistakes, but it sounds like you may need a little help, or a switch in meds. Good Luck. [ Reply | More ]

Well, in my experience, the slap on the face, when your frustrated at your kid is not discipline but abuse. Is it the worse thing that she lost control, no, it happens, but SHE is saying that she acidentally grazed his eye, and that kind of loss of control happens 3-4 times a month. I don't think I flamed, she asked for advice. [ Reply | More ]

you sound like me... ds is 2 1/2. i stopped zoloft 6 mos ago and had a tough time dealing with normal toddler behavior and would get soooo upset the few times i gave ds a little smack on the hand for hitting, etc. i am much better now. i think it just took time to learn how to cope without the meds. i never did get around to theray, but i do think it would have helped. also- the whole guilt thing afterwards made things worse. dont be so hard on yourself. nobody is perfect. just try to practice patience... thanks (op here). I am working really hard on the anger thing, and it's getting better. I have affirmations posted around the house, i try and meditate, i exercise. But the "spastic" anger, as the poster above noted, is stil lthere. Talk therapy doesn't REALLY work for me--I've been in therapy in the past for a stretch of 7 years, and really, I was still pissed. I am reading about anger addiciton (not that I get angry that often, but I can relate to feeling out of control) and the literature states that you have to treat anger as an addiction, full stop. Sorry: I really didnt mean to make you feel worse I posted about (Spastic Anger), I know how bad my mom felt when she lost control, then I'd try to make her feel better because I knew she felt so bad. She would end up throwing things at us and doing things that she really had no control over. I swear if she was medicated she would have been fine, I think it was totally chemical and hormonal. But it did get worse as the years went buy...and when we were teenagers it was crazy! [ Reply | More ]

I remember when I was engaged to a very wealthy man, and I came from the above class (blue collar), anyway, I remember feeling guilty about flying first class! I'm not saying I like being blue collar again, but I don't miss the guilt. 105 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Does that mean that we should ship excellent teachers off to school districts based on the notion of uniform quality of teaching? Or should we let the top teachers apply for jobs where they want to work? Obviously, it is the later. Which puts the children in some parts of the country at a huge disadvantage. Not many people dream of teaching in Buffalo County, South Dakota. [ Reply | More ]

I grew up in the middle of nowhere and got a quality education, so your conclusion is wrong. Just dismissing the problems we have as a fact of life is not acceptable. I think 9/11 sadly tipped those stats. And firefighters in the US, if you're including firefighters who fight wildfires, yes, that's extremely dangerous. But NYFD really isn't suffering fatalities on a large scale when you consider the size of the dept. and the city, thank God [ Reply | More ]

When you sign up for the test they give you a practice test to do at home with your kid. If you don't do it you are a fool. A lazy fool. If you do it and discover that your kid doens't understand a basic test concept, then you are stupid if you don't spend a day or two trying to teach him/her this concept that he/she is probably totally ready to grasp just hasn't been exposed yet. My best advice: make peace NOW with the fact that testing 4 yr olds is inherently arbitrary. It might work out well for your dc, and it might fail miserably. You can prep until the cows come home, and your kid could still bomb the test for reasons wholly outside your control. Remember also that the G&T test really has nothing to do with your dc's ability to succeed in school. The sooner you realize this, the better off you will be in the long run. [ Reply | More ]

There's prepping and there's prepping. Yes, you should certainly do the sample test. Probably twice -- three weeks before and maybe once more closer to the test. But I see nothing wrong with doing fun workbooks or Brain Quest cards to give your child a chance to get familiar with some concepts he/she may not have encountered before, like sequencing or differences. So many schools these days are progressive and they don't teach any of this stuff. It falls on you. Other things to know for the BRSA -- does your child know all his or her shapes? Mine didn't. I didn't know that. How silly not so show him or her. [ Reply | More ]

start 5 days before and go 5 days after, just do it everyday and you don't have to worry. I know I got pregnant on day 13, that is 13 days after the first day of my period. [ Reply | More ]

no I meant that it is only too much if he has documented problems. Statistically, it only improves your chances by 2-4% doing it every day, but some of us actually like sex, so I didn't want her to get wrong impression that every day is going to hurt. [ Reply | More ]

you can't get pregnant after you ovulate. you need to figure out your cycle and then have sex beginning 3-5 days before you expect to ovulate. [ Reply | More ]

of course you can. [ Reply | More ]

no, you can't. it takes up to 24 hours for the sperm to get where they need to be. so you need to be having sex before ovulation because the egg is viable for less than 24 hours. [ Reply | More ]

24 hours is a long time. You can ovulate, have sex an hour later and get pregnant. Your absolutes just don't cut it. [ Reply | More ]

statistically, it's not that likely to get pregnant day of ovulation. The egg starts aging as soon as it is released, and isn't as easily fertilized later in the 24 hour cycle. [ Reply | More ]

best is day or two before ovulation. Keep having sex until 2 days later (just in case). [ Reply | More ]

My ob said that many problems ttc come from women relying on timing to have sex, instead of just doing it as much as possible. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] We now know why people send their younger children to sleepaway at an earlier age than their older child. My younger ds does not know what to do with himself with his brother away. He's been sad and irritable every since his brother went to camp. Anyone have the same experience? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

LOL! Opposite problem in our house: #2 loved having the house to himself in the summertime and was anti-sleepaway camp for years and years (even though #1 thinks it's the best ever). It's funny b/c #2 is loud and gets plenty of attention during the year, but I think he really liked being on his own for those 7 weeks each year. #2 "aged out" of day camp (which he loved) last year and we made him go away this summer (and I've been told that he's doing well!). BTW, DH and I love the quiet (although, of course, we miss DC)! :) [ Reply | More ]

I've struggled with my weight and, for me, being thin means that things are going well (I eat when I'm stressed or unhappy -- even though I should really know better!). I do become obessesed and it's not the best outlook -- but it tends to happen when my personal life is at a high! [ Reply | More ]

90% of people would rather be thin and miserable than fat and happy...I am part of that 90%. But... when I am really happy, I tend to gain weight, when I'm anxious in a shitty relationship I'm dreamy thin. Some times I think of getting back with ex husband, just to drop a few lbs! [ Reply | More ]
